Writing Round-Up

Dec 10, 2012 14:42

Stolen from thirdbird_fic: This year in writing.

Total number of completed stories: 22 (but there are at least 5 more that will be posted before the year's end)

Total word count: 157,713 <- OH.MY.GOD.

Fandom breakdown: 16 Criminal Minds (2 of these are Supernatural crossovers), and 4 Sherlock.

Overall Thoughts: It seems that I wrote A LOT this year. My total wordage for 2012 is 50,000 words more than the longest story that I've ever written, and that sucker took me 3 years to complete. So, yay me!

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? I didn't predict writing anything for 2012. I got stuck in an idea for a Criminal Minds fic and I guess it just snowballed from there. I gotta say that I've rarely been this consistently productive at something that I wasn't getting paid to do.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? Sherlock/John - not because I can't see it (clearly I can), but because I was intimidated at writing Sherlock.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? Since I didn't plan any of this, I'm not sure that I set out to 'risk' anything. I'm still writing within my comfort zone (relationship fics) but would like to branch out into more universal themes. I'm also making an effort to veer away from explicit sex. I hate writing it and I find it a bit boring unless it's insanely hot.

Do you have any fanfic or podfic goals for the New Year? I try not to set goals. Less pressure that way ;)

From my past year of writing, what was...

My best story of this year: Wait... you want ME to choose? fuckballs. I have no idea - it's like being asked to choose a favorite pet or something. That's just cruel.

My most popular story of this year: Proposal Conundrum wins this honor, but it's sorta unfair because the Sherlock fandom is so big. It's Time To Start Wanting What You Have is a close second in a fandom with a much smaller base, so that's pretty significant too.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Timing Is Everything. I really like this story, but fandom doesn't. That's what you get for writing an unpopular pairing, I guess.

Most fun story to write: You Didn't See Anything. It was the first time that I tried to write Sam and Dean from Supernatural, and it was just waaaaaay too much fun ;)

Story with the single sexiest moment: Listen - here's the thing - after you've spit-balled, written, trashed, re-worked, edited, and posted smut, it ceases to be sexy at all. I have no clue what moment was sexiest, if any.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: All The Sinners Grin When Your Great Disaster Falls. That's a strange-ass story for me - perhaps not wrong, but definitely strange.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Ummm, well "It's Time To Start Wanting What You Have" was my first slash story. I now write 50% het and 50% slash for the CM fandom. That was unexpected.

Hardest story to write: Honestly, the hardest story to write is still in progress - it's called "Morally Indefensible" and I think that says it all, really...

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: I used an unusual amount of personal reflections in "Timing Is Everything". It made me feel a bit exposed afterwards.

In conclusion: Well, I'm terribly chuffed with myself ;D I would like to keep this up going forward. Perhaps I might even work up the courage to try my hand at an original story idea.

linkity-link-link, writing, meme, friends, fanfiction, omgwtf, write something you miserable fuck, fandom, yay me!
