So I started my new rotation last week at the VA in Mboro. My preceptor is a PA and her name is Mary. She's from Louisiana and she cusses and chews nicotine gum all day. I pretty much love her. I'm learning Internal Medicine which is basically getting labs and managing blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. That's HTN, DM, and HLD if you're cool. I don't particularly care for it. There's not a lot of patient contact, plus it's a "Restorative Care" facility so basically physical therapy. Most of these guys have had some sort of knee surgery/amputation or a stroke.
Naturally one of them is my boyfriend. This guy was out drinking and fell off the barstool, he hit his head and had a stroke. He has no teeth and no hair and a big long white beard. He has fallen twice since he has been there but still insists nothing is wrong with him and refuses treatment. We are just trying to find a place for him to go so we can discharge him.
We got a new pt who had an AKA (above the knee amputation) in November and a BKA (below the knee amputation) in December. He told me that he was a very healthy person and that he was completely motivated to do whatever it takes to get better. That includes everything except taking his medications and quitting smoking. Whatever.
I am still having a good time and I really like Mary. I have my next rotation lined up back at Meharry doing Ortho surgery! I really like surgery and this preceptor, Ronda is very thorough which I think is good for me. I can make some good habits right off the bat. Pretty sweet!
