Proof That Not All Men Are Thoughtless Wankers

I talked to my dad today about shopping the Christmas presents we were planning for family members, and we both agreed that it was a year to be practical in our gift-giving.

Until he told me about the gift he has planned for my mother.

See, my mother has many times reminisced about a toy carousel that she once had when she was a little girl. Her father (my biological grandfather) died when she was only four, so most of her memories of him are hazy, but she remembers that the time after he died was very sad and very difficult for her and my grandmother, in ways both emotional and financial. Because they were so needy, Mom was given a winter coat and a toy by the Goodfellows on the Christmas after her father's death, and she vividly remembers the toy she received: a toy carousel that spun around. It made a huge impression on her, understandably, and it was her favorite toy. Over many years and several moves, the carousel was eventually lost, but she still mentions it from time to time.

So this year, without prompting by me or anybody else, my father went out and found one for her. He tried to find something as close to her description as possible, while making sure that it would make a nice Christmas decoration so that Mom can have it out for the whole season if she likes. I got to see it, and it's really lovely--very colorful, all these little carved animals. I just know Mom's going to adore this present, and I'm so impressed with my dad's thoughtfulness.

See, it doesn't only happen in fiction!
