Nothing warms my heart like loyalty, and I am loyal to a fault to my friends as well.

Ooh, I think you scared the ankle straight! It's behaving itself much better now, thank goodness. I have no idea what was wrong, but I'm glad it isn't anymore.

I love Machiavelli. I don't really enjoy reading philosophy.political philosophy, but he's so repfreshingly honest about what he's doing. I was laughing out loud last time I read The Prince.

Amortentia is an interesting question.

You can ask me some, if you like.

I hope the ankle is getting better. *hugs*

I find The Prince to be laugh-out-loud funny, too, especially in comparison to a lot of political philosophy texts--and yes, refreshingly honest is exactly it. He's unapologetic about his aims, and he's very clear-eyed about what people do and for what reasons. That's a lovely contrast to, say, Rousseau, who is interesting and of course extremely intelligent, but laughably deluded when it comes to "the state of nature ( ... )

1. You put that so well: Machiavelli sees the world as it is, not as it should be. I'm not a utopian (far from it), and I was also rather pleased to see you use the word "teleogy," as I only learned it this week! I'm in a philosophy class entitled "Ethics," and it's so fascinating to see how my (introductory) background in political philosophy fits in.

2. Sounds fascinating! Wow.

3. That would smell soo good...

4. I love Galaxy Quest, too! He is so hysterical in it, oh my goodness. Now I want to watch it again!

5. Loyalty: same here.

1. I'm glad you agree! I can see what's appealing about Utopianism, but I don't ultimately see it as helpful or practical. I think I'm too pragmatic to be swayed by it.

2. It was a really fascinating class. I got a chance to thank that professor a few years ago, and I told him what a difference he'd made in my life. I was so thrilled to get a chance to let him know that what he'd said resonated beyond the classroom.

3. Hee! Thank you. Those are some of my favorite things.

4.Me too! I haven't watched it in a while, but now I want to dig it out and see it tonight.

5. ~nods~ For me, that's the bedrock of a good friendship.
