I majored in philosophy.

That explains so much! My original degree is in political philosophy. :-)

Whereas the "J" would be saying, whatever, OK, I don't care, let's just END this, already, and call it done!

~coughs~ I... may be prone to making such statements. *g* Not always (not now, for instance!), but when it comes to arguments that I can already see are unwinnable, then yeah, I'm prone to want to just have it over and done with. My mother is an F type, and she can drive me crazy because she never want to just make a decision and stick with it. I scan all the choices quickly, snip out all those that I can see will be unprofitable, and then go with what's left. For somebody who deals in literature, my brain is oddly machine-like, and many INTJs are in science rather than humanities.

But like Luna, I just shrug and go on merrily being me, whereas Severus would close up and go into Deep Hiding.

Well, if I'm anything to go by, then yes, he'd curl up and retreat. It takes such a monumental effort for we INTJs to reveal anything of ourselves that an unfavorable response from others will mean that the walls go back up, higher and stronger than before. That's why I think Luna could be a good match for him, because she'd give him that level of security and acceptance.

On the other hand, I relate to Severus being something of a control freak... *cough* And of course the introversion, intelligence, and intuition.

Ditto!

~grins~

Alright, you've got me: I do go into an argument with the objective of winning it. That's why I was Political Philosophy to begin with, and bear in mind that I came thisclose to being a lawyer, so the instinct has only been sharpened over time. Not that I don't love a good bit of analyzing, of course (seems to be all I do these days), but I think it's probably characteristic of J-types to want to win, and therefore to cut off lines of debate that they don't see as winnable.

Incidentally, this is why I am, at heart, a Slytherin. :-)

Whereas I'm assuming that the point is to discuss and examine the ideas involved from every possible angle and understand it all thoroughly, and THEN say, OK, done.

You're such a Ravenclaw! That's just such a wonderfully Luna-like attitude. Did you take that Meyers-Briggs Sorting Hat Test?

We have indeed come far from the topic of my wish list, but what the hell. As you say, it's quite fun to discuss this topic with somebody who is not only knowledgeable about the subject, but interested in it!

The Meyers-Briggs Sorting Hat is here. It's probably very different from the other tests you've taken, but I and several others found it to be uncannily accurate, so give it a try! (Big surprise: I'm an INTJ Slytherin!)

I tend to think of the "I *MUST* win!" mentality as more Gryffindor than Slytherin. ;-) But maybe that's because I associate it with the jock mentality and personality?

That could be. For me, I associate it with forms like debate and academic competition, because that's my frame of reference. I think that Slytherins do aim to come out on top, and I see that kind of calculation (this is a worthwhile investment, but this other gets me no further to my goal) as fairly intrinsic to the type. Of course, given the schizoid way Rowling characterized the house, who really knows? :-P

Can Slytherins be characterized as the people who just don't quit? Or is that more suited to another House?

I think that they can be--Severus certainly is one--but primarily, I think I'd call that trait persistence, which seems to exemplify the best of Hufflepuff to me. Then again, I think most people are mixes. Severus is a perfect example: Slytherin cunning, Ravenclaw cleverness, Hufflepuff loyalty and endurance, coupled with Gryffindor bravery.

As for Luna, I guess I have to go back and re-read the passages featuring her to get a better handle on her character; my impression was that she was very dreamy and floaty rather than relentlessly analyzing ideas.

I actually think that Luna's dreaminess is indicative of her being lost in that relentless analysis--always exploring, always looking to understand, completely unconcerned with whether an answer is right or wrong. She's just always doing this inside her own head, which is why she seems to always come up with a piercing insight out of thin air.

And, in case you haven't figured it out by now, in terms of being a Solo, Partnership, or Team style of worker, I am very strongly a Solo ;-)

I'm sure you've already guessed, but ditto. What is this 'teamwork' of which you speak? ;-)

I can see that raising your son must have held its share of personality conflicts! I am for sure the only INTJ in my family--probably even the only one in my extended family, but then again, it's a fairly rare type. I recognize other INTJs when I meet them. My brother is very strongly an ENFP, and my mother (like you) is primarily an INFP--and yes, very Luna-like. My Dad's never taken the test, but as you did with your son, I went trait by trait and figured him out as an ESFJ--and sure enough, the description fits to a T. I laughed when it said that ESFJs are no good with theoretical or abstract concepts, because my father has never understood the first thing about what I do with literature. He tried to read one page of one of my theory texts once, and claimed it made his head hurt. ;-)
