Spirit Day It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.
RIP Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh (top)
RIP Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase (middle)
RIP Asher Brown and Billy Lucas. (bottom)
REBLOG to spread a message of love, unity and peace.

This isn't an abstract issue for me. In my senior year of high school, a friend of mine--a friend who had been subjected (at his all-male school) to a great deal of teasing and bullying for his sexuality--hung himself. He was such a wonderful, witty, talented, compassionate person, and the world is poorer for his absence. So today I am wearing purple and remembering Doug. The color of my outfit won't bring him back, and it won't put a miraculous end to bigotry without action to back it up, but it's a visible symbol of support, which can be much more important to those who are hurting than we sometimes credit. And it's also a tribute to a fine, fun, funny soul who was gone much too soon.
