Walking into the Salvadorean restaurant, the teens lounging in the entryway made lascivious comments about me in Spanish. Later, when I stood up from my table at the same time that two latinos got up from a neighboring one, they politely and respectfully stepped back to let me go first.

I occasionally forget that wanting to be treated with respect and wanting to be treated as an equal are very different things. That treating women respectfully tends to be coupled with objectification (machismo culture?) and that chivalry excludes equality.
Sigh. I'm a modern woman. I expect to have it all. Traditional roles should merge seamlessly with my own independence; maternity leave shouldn't interfere with the advancement of my career and you should take me seriously at work regardless of whether I flaunt my femininity.

Oops. And then biological reality writes over cultural standards.

Luckily, I'm not easily discouraged.

In other news, Rosie got a makeover and looks totally hot.
