Writer's Fodder: Eat, Drink, Be Merry

Nov 25, 2008 09:43

*scratches head* I generally veto all food that has emerged from a can. I also veto anything that resembles fruit cake (oh no you did not try to disguise that crap with a chocolate genache!). I'd have to say that l don't eat much sweet taters with marshmallows, either. My grandpa made the absolute best recipe (most of the time the sweet taters were from scratch, but sometimes from a can), and no one in all the years he's been gone can make it right. Same goes for my great aunt Izzie's blueberry and apple pies. *sigh*

From many of the other answers here (I laughed really hard at some of descriptions of holiday food horror), folks really don't seem to like cranberry sauce, giblet gravy, or green bean casserole. There's even some dissers of pumpkin pie (gasp of dismay)! I, of course, eat it all. And then some. Mmmm, more for me!

*scratches head some more* There was that year I undercooked the turkey. Ooooh, bad. Lucky for us, I was able to save it, continue cooking it & not botulate us all. There was also the year I had an absolutely perfect lemon meringue pie-- except that it didn't set. I was so grouchy about that one. Sometimes my cooking and baking skills leave much to be desired.
I have many good family stories of holiday dinners gone awry. I'll have to post some, over the next couple of days-- especially since I'm not planning doing anything except working on Thanksgiving day. Hmmm, who am I kidding? I'll probably make mini versons of my favorites, and probably some chicken. I'll be so full, I'll brap over any crabby customers. That'll show 'em.

I eat most of the traditional foods (at least of the Midwest) without complaint, as long as it's not from a can. I like my cranberry sauce made from scratch. Hey, it's truly not hard-- go to elise's site for an excellent brandied cranberry recipe, as well as regular "crankleberry" sauce. Green bean casserole is one of the few anti-can dishes I'll make, simply because it takes cream of mushroom soup (I use frozen green beans). Although it would be great to use homemade cream of mushroom soup, I don't have that much gumption. I prefer to make stuffing from prepared (cubed, dried in oven & seasoned lightly) French bread. I'd rather die of dysentry than eat packaged mashed potatoes. Ughhh to both.
Drat, all this talk of food is making me a-hungered. I'll go fetch a cuppa joe, here...

What else do I have to say>? Uhhm... Oh yes. In Other News, my mom is down visiting (we're actually getting along-- whoa, stop the presses!)-- she's currently off on a jaunt with one of her friends-- and we're going to go see the Vatican Splendors exhibit at theMN Historical Society later today. I'm so excited! It's a little spendy ($20), but Holy Crap, the exhibit is only coming to three US cities, and I live 15 minutes away from one of them! I'll actually be able to see Michaelangelo's compass, Pope Pius IX's  cape, etc. According to the website, many of the 200 items that will be on display rarely, if ever, have been made available for public viewing. I may not be Catholic, but I have an eyeball for art & beauty.
We'll probably have an early supper at Café Latte as well, and then I can say that this day will be an official success. Mmmm. Soup, salad and bread at Café Latte. *drool*

OK. I'm going to go do something for an hour or so, until my mom gets back.

Cheers & All
