So I had sinus surgery yesterday. I'm more calling it a sinus procedure because really it wasn't surgery; it just involved general anesthesia (which I was really, really okay with; I don't want to be awake when they're vacuuming out my head). It went fine, and Morgan and I were home by like 11am I think. I pretty much slept all of yesterday ( Read more... )

Try a local slaughterhouse or farm. I've got a source, but the shipping from Maine would be crazy. I'm sure that someplace between you and Portland has what you need. We feed HK and Open Farm. She gets the HK in her bowl and the kibble in a Kong Wobbler.

Bone-wise, if you're feeding raw you'll want non-weight bearing bones--shoulder blades, ribs--not legs or knuckles. Dogs can eat the non-weight bearing bones completely, but they just chew on the others. The heavier bones can splinter and hurt your dog as well.

Good luck. I'm happy to hear that Lissa isn't the only spoiled, adopted dog :-)

I asked on FB and got pointed to a couple good butchers in the area, and the owner of Paddywack and I chatted and she said she had one more option for getting in the knuckle bones. So she's ordered me a package and if it arrives on Wednesday, great; if it doesn't, I'll check out one of the butchers. It's easy to find marrow bones, but the knuckle bones are hard for some reason. We give him the weight bearing bones to chew on recreationally, and when they get too small we take them away.

We feed HK in the morning and the NWN in the evening, but I'm wondering if we can/should switch to the frozen raw for both meals. Buddy eats both without a problem but I think he's more enthusiastic about the raw.

And trust me--this dog is ridiculously spoiled. But he's my baby and I love him to pieces and I don't think I could have gotten through the last year without him, so I don't feel guilty about it :)
