hello north carolina

oh. my. god. How do people live here? Or even further south? My WA-acclimated body is freaking out. The air sticks to me. The air does not stick to me in WA. I was talking to someone tonight who was telling me it was a great time to be here: "It'll be 95 all week, heat index around 105". I am pretty sure he wasn't being sarcastic.

What. The. Fuck. I want a shower every time I go outside except we're on well water and it absolutely stinks of sulfur. I really need to shower tonight but it will be a very fast one. Possibly a Navy style shower, so I have the water on as little as possible.

However, that all having been said, we're right on the beach and the view is lovely, and it's mostly good to see family and no one's driven me crazy yet although we did just get here last night. And air conditioning is a gift from the gods. Also we found the 24 hour supermarket and the Starbucks inside it, so at least we're in civilization.

We got almost no sleep Friday night, and left the house on time at 4am Saturday. No trouble getting to the parking garage, or the terminal, and getting through security was a breeze. I had managed to upgrade our tickets going to Charlotte so we flew cross-country in relative comfort, and they fed us, and mostly I just slept the whole flight out.

We had enough time in Charlotte to cross two concourses, hit the bathrooms, and get to our gate, and we were in the air for about half an hour going to Wilmington. (Wilmington, for the record, is a tiny airport. Really, really tiny.) But we got the rental car, and our luggage, and found our way to where we're staying. Getting in and getting our keys was a slight hassle because of my MIL but we succeeded.

And then we fell over and woke up about 11pm. We stayed up until the cousins with whom we are sharing this apartment got in, at like 1:30, although i mostly spent that time dozing on the couch. And then we went back to sleep and woke up at 11:30am.

We have accomplished nothing today, but when Morgan gets back (he went for frozen custard with family; I opted out) we're going to run out to the drugstore and the grocery store to get a few things. Tomorrow my goal is to hit the beach, but I refuse to hit the beach until I have sunblock because I'm not stupid and I'm also very pale. (Cousin J hit Sam's Club and bought some, but it's the spray on kind and I'm not sure I trust it to keep me from burning.)

Unfortunately my head is starting to ache, I think from the hot/cold whiplash, so I'm going to go take something and relax until Morgan gets back.
