First, a note that our garage appears to have broken; something has bent and now the door won't open. So we're working on getting that fixed. Who even fixes garage door openers these days? How much do they cost to install? Assuming we need to replace it, that is. I don't know.
Someone on AO3 brought up a plot point for WC I hadn't considered, which is: Does Jim (once he gets pulled into the madness, which he will in a chapter or three) go to Spock Prime for help and if so, how does that play out?
First, the reasons NOT to do this: One, it's a POV issue. The story so far is Khan POV and I don't really want to switch out of his head because he's kind of difficult to get right without going OOC - I mean, you could argue that I'm already writing someone fairly different from the movie, but whatever, I think he's still grounded enough in canon that no one's bitched at me for it yet. But I digress. The point is that the story is Khan POV, and a conversation between Jim and Spock Prime would likely not involve Khan and therefore need to be Jim's POV, which might throw readers out of the story.
Two, is there really a point? One of my major issues with Into Darkness was that they used Spock Prime and I was like "Augh but no why?" about it. Spock Prime even says he doesn't want to screw with everyone's destiny and then proceeds to do just that. What purpose would involving him in the story serve? What help could he provide to Khan and my OCs, assuming he was even willing to help in the first place?
Those are both fairly big reasons NOT to do this. The reasons in favor, though:
1. This could be so much fun to write. I have multiple scene ideas in mind for handling this plot point. Some of them I think might have to be written as interludes and not part of the main story due to POV issues, but that I can handle.
2. Spock Prime might turn out to be useful. I don't know if section 31 existed in TOS universe, but he might know something about it. Even if he doesn't, he might know enough about Starfleet brass to know who they can trust and who they can't. I have to think about the value he'd add, though.
3. I think Jim would probably go looking for an ally of sorts, and he wouldn't go to his Spock since this isn't really kosher and that would lead to more issues than it'd help. But I can see him suggesting they talk to Pike, or Spock Prime, to try and get an influential ally who wouldn't necessarily believe Marcus, or who would believe Khan about Marcus.
4. Something I was emailing the person who brought this up about is that one of the things I'd like to explore a little--again, probably as an interlude or postscript or something--is the difference between Khan 1.0 and Marla McGivers, and Khan 2.0 and my OFC. She pointed out that Khan 1.0 was always trying to manipulate Marla, ever from the beginning, and he was very clearly using her. Now, if you go with the movie, it's also clear he fell in love with her. But what always struck me was the effect he had on her, how immediate and powerful it was. She was a Starfleet officer who gave up everything for him, who would have faced court-martial had she not gone into exile with him. And she didn't even think about facing court martial, she just said she'd go.
Khan 2.0 is different from Khan 1.0 in a lot of ways (one being, actually that in WC he has wings and in TOS-verse he doesn't) and he's not trying to manipulate my OFC. He didn't ask for her help, in fact, she kind of clobbered him over the head until he accepted it. However, that being said, after two days she was already making plans to rearrange her entire life for him, and she's well aware that if she gets caught doing some of what she's doing court-martial will be the least of her problems. The character's an adrenalin junkie who lives for danger, so that explains some of it, but still, there's this immediately intense effect Khan has had on her, almost without trying.
The situations are different, and the women are different. Marla was being manipulated; my OFC is not. But there are some very striking similarities. Charisma, Khan has it, no matter which version of him you're using or the circumstances in which he finds himself. I'd like to have some kind of forum to play with this a bit, to maybe get Spock Prime to talk a bit about the Khan he knew and his wife.
This also means I have to figure out if Khan 1.0 (or Khan Prime, take your pick) had Rani or not. I lean toward not, truth be told, but I haven't fully decided. If everything's the same until the Narada attack, then I guess it would have made sense that he had her in that universe. But maybe other things are different, too.
I'm not sure the whole plot line fits in the story, and I don't know as I want to write outtakes or interludes for a fic that barely has an audience as it is. (Although I did break a thousand hits on the counter, but that's after eleven chapters and yeah, not many people are reading this. I'm mostly okay with that.) But it could be so much fun to explore. I can see Khan 2.0 hearing what "he" did in another universe and thinking "Wow, he was an idiot."
At the moment it doesn't matter because I have to finish the current chapter and possibly one after it before I bring Jim on board, and from there I have some breathing room before I figure out what to do with Spock Prime if anything. And I still haven't figured out the ending to the story, which is bothering me more than I like. I mean, I'm only like 70k words into this story and odds are it'll end up being as epic as FF if not more so by the time I finish it, so I have time, but still, I'd like to have a point to head toward.
One of the differences between WC and FF is that in FF, there was never any question but that Khan would end up staying in Starfleet, and the augments would end up signing on as well. I think in WC it's not going to be that simple; Khan in WC has zero reason to trust any of Starfleet and probably just wants out. And my OFC isn't as tied to the organization as Jim is, so if Khan leaves, she might--probably would--go with him. I just have to figure out what Khan and his family would end up doing instead. That's probably where I'm stalling; since I can't figure out what they'll end up doing, I can't figure out how to end the story. Argh. Anyone have thoughts on what to do with seventy-four people, seventy-three of whom are genetically enhanced?
I've been emailing with the person who originally suggested this plot point and my usual sounding board, and they're not in agreement - person A thinks it would be cool and person B thinks this might not be necessary, which is partially why I'm so torn over it. They both have valid points and I don't know whose I like or agree with more.
However now it is just six pm and I am leaving work in fifteen minutes to half an hour so I am going to wrap this up and poke at WC for a bit before I go home and fall down.
