Dear Dr. Z:
You said my having a head CT was probably a good idea given my history of headaches, migraines, and then the two car accidents I can't remember but at least one of which gave me a concussion. My PCP and neurologist decided I didn't need imaging, but you thought it might be a good idea just to rule out "anything pathological", so I said "sure" and obediently got my head scanned and contrast dye injected into my veins.
I called your office today to get the results, and your receptionist called me back to tell me that the results were, and I quote, "Nothing urgent" so you're fine with me seeing you at my next scheduled follow-up, which is 12/13, two and a half weeks from now. But what does "nothing urgent" mean? Does it mean everything's normal? Does it mean there actually is something wrong in my head that my neurologist hasn't been able to find? "Nothing urgent" has a different meaning than "Results all normal", you see, and I'm used to the latter. No one's ever told me my CT results (and I've had plenty of head CTs in the last decade) were "Nothing urgent".
I am choosing to believe this means I do NOT have any kind of brain tumor or other mass inside my head, since I'm guessing if that were the case you'd be telling me to come in immediately and then sending me to an oncologist. Also, I feel like that would have shown up before now. But really, this is not a very reassuring answer to give someone recovering from a concussion (even if it was "mild", it screwed me up for a while) and I would really like some clarification.
Neurotically yours,
becc
