Yesterday was just...so, I work in an environment that deals with real-time issues, and part of that is we have a TV in the room that's always turned to a news channel--currently it's on CNN--in case something major happens so we can react accordingly. Mostly I ignore it, but yesterday I happened to look up at the right time and see breaking news, explosions at the Boston Marathon. This ended up being a work thing because we had to prepare for increased traffic on our websites, so I and other people in the room were constantly refreshing pages and looking for updates and just...I don't know what to say. This is just a horrible thing.
I haven't caught up on news today yet so I don't know what the current status of the investigation is, whether they have a suspect or something, so if you know more than I do drop me a comment?
I feel weird talking about the mundanity of my life juxtaposed with explosions in Boston, but life has to go on.
I made it through a twelve hour shift yesterday without getting a migraine, which was pretty awesome. I was wiped by the end of it, of course, and starving because I didn't have much for lunch, but no migraine so yay on that. I came home and fell down for a bit and then took a lovely hot shower (I'm still having issues with the showerhead, so replacing that is high on my list of things to do around the house; anyone know how this is done and what I should be looking for?).
Speaking of showers I'm still looking for a decent conditioner. I tried a new one last night, Vidal Sassoon VS Pro line, the Smooth version, and then I used Aussie's Hair Insurance leave-in spray conditioner, and my hair is lovely and soft today but it still looks kind of dull and a little flat. Next time I'll try the VS conditioner and my Aveda styling product and see if I get a better result.
I used to use a rather expensive moisturizer from Kate Somerville, her oil free moisturizer, and I really liked it. I still like it. I love the packaging, which has an airless pump so it stays hygienic and you only get what you need. But in the move, I put it somewhere and cannot find where I put it. I tried using a moisturizer I bought off HauteLook but I noticed a few blemishes after I used it and I don't know if it was related, but I stopped using it just in case. However, I did buy a small bottle of pure jojoba oil at Trader Joe's a couple weeks back, so I've been using that as my nighttime moisturizer for the last few nights. I have to say, I really, really like it. I end up a little shiny after I use it but it does absorb quickly, and since it's my nighttime moisturizer I don't have to worry about going out with a shiny face. Today my skin is baby soft and smooth, no flakes anywhere, the blemishes I had are mostly faded, and the parts of my skin that are usually a bit oily are less oily than usual, just soft and smooth. And at $7 for a 4oz bottle, this will last me forever.
The idea that oil is bad for oily skin is actually crap; oils can be very beneficial to all skin types, including oily. I really like the cleansing oil I have; it works great as a makeup remover and it also leaves my skin clean and soft after using--although I do tend to follow up with a regular cleanser just in case.
I'm still waiting on some of the skincare products I ordered from Korea to arrive, but those were mostly cleansers, so I'll see how those do when I get them. I like the toner I use, and the jojoba oil is working well, and I love my ExfoliKate, but the cleanser I'm using is kind of eh. I alternate between two, and I like one--I use it when I don't use the ExfoliKate because it is a bit exfoliating--but the other I feel very meh about. I'm hoping I like the Korean things better. If not, I'll keep experimenting, I guess.
