“He’ll be down here in a few days,” Christian says, bringing the wineglasses over to the couch. He hands one to David and settles down next to him, taking a sip of his own. “It’s not so long now.”

David sighs and sips his wine. “I know,” he says. “It just seems...it’s that endless span of time before something happens and you’re all keyed up waiting for it and time goes slowly.”

“Trust me, honey, I know,” Christian says. “Not like I’ve ever had situations like that.” He smiles and kisses David’s cheek. “He’ll be here before you know it, and then you two can be blissfully happy and fucked out.”

“Possibly both at the same time,” David says. “Works for me.”

Christian laughs. “I see where your priorities lie,” he says. “Hi, princess.” Mimi leaps into his lap and settles down, kneading his thigh and purring loudly. Christian strokes her fur and she pushes her butt against his hand, flicking her tail.

“It’s been a while,” David says. “I mean, well--”

“You were having sex with Tony,” Christian says. “Was it bad sex?”

“No, no it wasn’t,” David says, reaching over to rub between Mimi’s ears. “It’s just--he was new to playing, to submission in general, and I had to go carefully with him. I didn’t want to push too hard too fast, or anything, so a lot of what we did was fairly basic, or light play, you know?”

“And that’s not enough for you,” Christian says, continuing to pet Mimi, who tucks her paws under her and slits her eyes, content.

“No, not really,” David says. “Danny--he’s an experienced sub. He knows what he wants, what he needs, and he matches me, all the way. I can push him and he pushes back, but he also knows when to yield. We work well together, I think. He needs someone who’ll be firm with him, and I need someone who plays hard.”

“Harder than I do,” Christian says softly.

“Yes,” David says, not bothering to deny it. “But you and I were never meant to be, baby.” He leans his head against Christian’s, and after a moment Christian smiles and leans back. “Besides, you adore Joshua and he you.”

“I do,” Christian says. “I really do, and I’m not--it’s not like I wish things were different. I’m happy with my life and my relationship with Joshua as it is, and I want you to be happy with Danny. It’s just...sometimes I wonder, you know? What things would have been like if it’d been you and I who grew out of the whole mess, instead of me and Joshua.”

“I think it’s better this way,” David says. He strokes Christian’s curls; Christian sets his wineglass down on the table and moves to snuggle against David, head on his shoulder and legs tucked under him. Mimi meows in protest and leaps down from the couch. “It’s...let’s be honest, baby. You need someone who’s going to indulge and pamper you, and Joshua has the resources for that I don’t. And I need someone who’s going to play harder with me, someone I can push. You and I are meant to be friends who snuggle and sleep together sometimes and don’t have sex.”

“It’s the next best thing,” Christian says.

“Pretty much,” David says. He rests his cheek against Christian’s hair, moving to rub his back instead of stroking his hair. “Am I staying tonight?”

“If you don’t mind,” Christian says. “Joshua won’t be back until tomorrow afternoon and you know I hate sleeping alone.”

“If I minded, I wouldn’t have offered,” David says. “You know I like sharing a bed with you, even though you sprawl.”

“And occasionally fall out of bed,” Christian says with a sigh.

“On bad nights,” David says. He takes a sip of his wine and sets the glass down. “I do love you, you know.”

“I know,” Christian murmurs. “I love you, too.”
