when the moon hits your eye...
i was so productive today- so efficient with my time- so proud. went to class today, talked to caroline about her decision in choosing different dental schools. she gave me a list of other schools well known for their clinical program. encouraged me to buy those well-known DAT practice exams online etc.
afterwards, studying at the IC. i've come to ACCEPT that i am more effective withOUT my computer. ingrained all the bio notes i took in my mind. it was splendidly wonderful <3 i pretended i was lecturing a classroom and was able to explain what was going on. i ran into a vague concept with muscle responses so i headed to the biology room to get a book. luckily, a tutor was still there and directed me to another guy that was studying. ive seen him around lately- not really sure WHAT he's studying for, but it looked difficult. figured it was MCAT- a THOROUGH book on MCAT.
well, i asked him my questions and i was surprised that he listened. my questions to tutors are usually overlooked. I tend to get a vague answer and accept that i'm looking way beyond the scope. But here we are; having a CONVERSATION about action potential of the post and presynatpic neurons, summation to past the threshold, excited neuron, inhibition, tetanatus and its relation to tetanus. I was able to ask him follow-up questions. It was VERY EXCITING. And that was the beauty, he spoke so eloquently and used technical terms. If i didnt know the term, he would simply define it.
I then learned he's a medical student at the U, studying for whatever 4th years do. Funny because he avoided telling me they year he graduated- but its not even that old. then again, maybe im use to this older people thang. hah. anyhoo, i now know who to talk to when i have questions.
went back to my study room to find SOMEONE else there. name was albert, a psych tutor for the summer program. it was funny because we talked about our passion for the subjects we tutor and aim to spread hope among students who gave up. nerds, and proud of it! cool kid. understood what social psychology means.
then as i left to head to the car, hannah called me! whoops today is our study night! i was NOT prepared, i didnt bring all my reference books nor my computer. we met up anyway, because i had already cancel our study night on monday. she introduced me to a great korean restaurant on teh AVE! i honestly do NOT past 45th very often so i was so surprised of the great restaurants, bars, and boutiques around. so cute! we ate delicious food and with full stomachs, it was time to fill our minds.
cracked the books open to general chemistry. hannah is an awesome study partna because she doesnt give up. she reads the details i overlook, and i tend to make sense of the aims of the questions. i guess tutoring for chemistry, really prepares you for the typical questions asked. it was really fun. we bumped into brian, a guy i met at steven's house partay. he was a nursing student and had a great smile (who doesnt??). told me a good story about dentistry that he observed at the school. a 16-year old had BAC growing on this teeth, didnt take care of it in time, BAC made way through blood vessels and got to his heart. AT the age of 17, he had to get a costly, most dangerous surgery- heart transplant- because of his lack of response to oral care. i still think dentistry is an overlooked health field as something "luxurious" rather than a necessity. tis WRONG! WRONG!!
anyhoo- i picked up another book today on medicine, U.S. healthcare system, and health politics. it's extremely hard to read because i didnt agree with it. teh author starts off stating that health of americans are improving NOT because of hte advances in medicine- but its a natural evolution. that in fact, today's medicine has been worsening health conditions due to unknown side-effects, overprescribed drugs, and unnecessary operations. it was baffling!! medicine, historically, NOT helping- but rather hindering health of americans?! WHAT?!! insanity! i am well aware of the cases and the exceptions, but as a GENERAL trend? i dont believe it. i talked to ann about this, who said this isnt a crazy man or a crazy idea. that she had a whole lecture on this concept/theory last quarter. she told me it was pretty new to her as well. after this confirmation that it's been a STUDIED subject, i will give the book another chance.
so much to learn.
im trying to understand the political structure more. i have so many questions! what is the true difference between socialism and communism? what powers does a state district have and what is the relation to the electoral college? what are MY senators and representative views on the issues I care about?
another long entry with just too many details and questions, but that's just my style.
