My phone rang.
“Hello?”
“YAH! LEE HYUKJAE!! Didn’t you know how worried we were?? We thought everything had failed!”
“Minnie? What do you mean?”
“It’s been half an hour since you went to your room, and we haven’t heard from you since. We got worried,” Kyu explained.
“Oh. Sorry. I forgot to call you.”
Minnie sighed. “It’s ok. By the way, why are you whispering?”
“So my roommate won’t hear me.”
“Eh? Why??” Minnie asked.
“I’m hiding from her.”
“…Why?”
“I…am in the bathroom.” Kyu snickered somewhere off into the distance.
“You brat, I can hear you, you know. So, you guys are roommates now, huh?”
“Stop changing the subject, Hyuk. Why are you in the bathroom?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m hiding from her!”
“But why in the bathroom?”
“Minnie, it was obviously because she was changing her clothes, and since our beloved hyung was very nice and innocent and not sly and sneaky, he excused himself and hid in there,” Kyu explained, as if that was supposed to be bright and clear.
“Yah, brat…wait, am I on speaker??”
“When are you coming out??” Min asked, completely ignoring me.
“Never.”
“WHY?!” I sighed.
“She said that she was going to change and then meet her friends, so I decided to take a shower and unpack my clothes.”
“I told you.”
“Shut up, Kyu. Yeah? So what’s wrong?”
The words came out of my mouth before I knew it. “I don’t know how to put on my bra.”
“Puahahahahahahahahahaha!” How embarrassing.
“What?! It’s confusing! One minute I was wearing it, and then suddenly it broke!”
“Ahaha, hyung, bras can’t break,” the snarky brat replied.
“How would you know? The back isn’t connected.”
“Do you see a hook there?”
“Huh?”
“There should be a hook so you can fasten it together.” I looked. Yup, the stupid hook was there. I heard some strange crackling on the other end of the line.
“We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please hang up and try again later. Thank you.”
“WHAT???! YAH, DON’T YOU DARE HANG UP ON ME, YOU BRAT!!” Beep. I face palmed.
“Eunhyuk-sshi? Are you ok?” Ah, I forgot about Jessica!
“NO, NO, NO, I am absolutely fine! Uh, it was just my stupid dongsaeng calling me! Please don’t worry!”
“Ok, Eunhyuk-sshi! I’m going out now! See you later!”
“Ok!” So awkward. I heard her shut the door and looked at my bra. How the hell do you put this together? I can’t fasten it together, I thought, glaring at the bra. I looked at the door. I should find another bra that hasn’t been broken. Yeah, that’s an excellent idea. I slowly opened the door.
Jessica walked in.
I screamed. “GAAAAH!!” I slammed the door back again, my face beet red. How can this be?! I didn’t have any clothes on at all!!
“AH! EUNHYUK-SSHI!! What happened?! Are you ok???” No, I am not ok at all.
“I-I am fine. I just thought that you left, so I came out to find my….shirt. I’m really sorry!” I yelled through the door.
“No, I’m sorry! I must have scared you! I’ll come in more slowly next time,” said Jessica. She knocked on the door. “Are you really ok in there? You need me to help you with anything?”
“NO, NO, NO, IT’S OK! You can’t, I mean, you don’t have to come in! I’m fine, really!!” I yelled again.
“Ok, Eunhyuk-sshi. I just came ‘cause I forgot my jacket. Um, just in case, I am leaving my phone number on your bed if you need me, ok?”
“Ok,” I mumbled.
“Bye, Eunhyuk-sshi!” I heard her ran out the door. I sighed.
I slowly peeked outside. The door is locked. The windows are still closed. No one will see me. It is safe to go out, nothing to worry about, I told myself. Just in case if luck really isn’t on my side today, I wrapped a towel around my body and another on my head, hiding my short hair. I slowly stepped out.
The door slammed open again.
I screamed for the second time today.

“This is her phone number?” asked Kyu, studying the number on the thin slip of paper. He put it down and continued staring at Jessica’s side of the room.
“Kyu, don’t look at other people’s personal belongings,” Minnie frowned, brushing my wig. He put it on my head and continued brushing it so it would shine.
“Just seeing what kind of person she is.”
“Playing detective?” I asked.
“Yeah, kind of.”
“So, what kind of person is she?” Minnie asked, forgetting the fact that he just asked Kyu to stop.
“The average university girl people find,” Kyu replied, picking up a stuffed bear on her bed and inspecting it. He looked over and saw that we have no idea what he’s talking about.
“You know, the type that loves to talk on the phone with her friends, likes cute things, daydreams about hot guys.”
“Ohhh.” Kyu face palmed.
“Ok, Hyuk, this is how you put on a bra.” Minnie showed me the hooks on the back of the bra and taught me how to fasten it. He smiled as I tried to master the skill that seems to be no problem for girls. “Before long, you’ll be able to fasten it even behind your back,” Minnie said cheerfully.
“How do you know these things?” I asked.
“Heechul hyung taught me.” Ah, he must have known I would mess up like this.
After Minnie and Kyu helped me unpack my things, we headed down to the cafeteria to get lunch. I sat down to save us a seat while Kyu and Minnie went to get food. I watched numerous students walk past, talking to friends, eating lunch, looking for their dorms or classes. Today was more like a get-to-know-your-school day, which I am glad for, because I would have been marked late on my first day of university because of the mishap this morning.
“Excuse me.” Someone tapped my shoulder. I looked up to see a pair of brown eyes staring down at me nervously. “Can I sit with you?”
“Uh, sure,” I said, as he sat down beside me. He gave me his hand to shake. “My name’s Siwon. Yours?”
“Um, Eunhyuk. Nice to meet you.”
“Thanks.” He smiled, flashing his dimples, and then turned to face the table. “I don’t know anybody yet, so it is kind of scary, just walking alone and having no one to talk to. But then I saw you sitting alone, so I thought, ‘Oh, this person must be lonely like me. I should try to make friends with her.’ So you don’t mind…” He raised his eyebrows as he looked at me. I had no idea what I was supposed to mind about, so I said, “No, I don’t.”
“Oh. That’s good. Thanks. I mean…” Siwon was acting really nervous. “I was just thinking, you know, that maybe we can be friends?” He looked at me hopefully.
“Yeah, there’s no reason not to.” I smiled. “I mean, I’m pretty nervous too, so it’s normal for you, since you don’t know anyone yet…besides me…” This was getting awkward.
Siwon smiled and looked at the food line. “You want me to get lunch for us?”
“No, it’s fine. My friends are getting the food, so…” Oops. He thought I was alone, and I forgot to tell him about Kyu and Minnie.
“Oh, you have other friends. Sorry about that…I thought you were alone…” he muttered. Great, now I made things worse.
To my relief, Kyu came back carrying the food, and Minnie came with the drinks a minute later. They both raised their eyebrows when they saw Siwon, but after they were introduced, everyone was smiling and talking, especially Siwon. When we all finished our lunch, Siwon stood up to leave. “I need to go now because I haven’t found my dorm yet. Thanks for letting me eat with you,” Siwon grinned. “It was nice talking to you guys.”
“Yeah, see you around, Wonnie,” said Minnie. Siwon blushed at his new nickname and waved at me. As soon as he was gone, Kyu pulled me closer. “What was he doing?”
“What do you mean? He just wanted to make friends with me,” I said.
“But, you are a girl. GIRL. Don’t guys make friends with other guys? They don’t get friendly with girls, unless they’re playboys,” Minnie frowned.
“He saw that I was sitting alone, so he thought I was lonely. That’s all, Minnie.”
“Really?” Minnie looked doubtful.
“Well, he’s a nice guy, so there’s probably nothing to worry about, as long as he doesn’t know hyung’s secret,” Kyu decided. “Let’s go check out our classes.”
We walked around, looking at the classrooms and students that will be our classmates. Each of us has three classes, one our major and the other two are what we just want to do for fun or the curiosity. Dance is my major and the other two classes are English and science. Kyu’s major is vocal and Minnie’s martial arts.
By the end of the day, we’re familiar with our classes and some of our classmates, so we returned to our dorms to rest for the big day tomorrow. Before I went into the dorm, Minnie pulled me aside. “Make friends with your roommate. And other girls, too.”
“Why? You guys and Siwon are enough.”
“What? With you being a girl, won’t it raise some suspicion if you’re hanging out with us all the time?”
“Oh. I could say you’re my cousins.”
“Forget it, Hyuk. No one’s gonna believe you if your only friends are a guy and some cousins, who are also guys. Make some girl friends, ok?” he smiled at me hopefully. I sighed.
“I have to ditch you for a bunch of girls?” Minnie’s smile fades.
“No, Hyuk. Look, it’s the only way you can look inconspicuous if you’re going to act like a girl, ok? Don’t worry, Hyuk. We’re still your friends. And I’m your best friend.” He smiled proudly and ruffled my hair. “Do well in your classes, ok? Goodnight, Hyuk.”
“Bye, Minnie.” I waved sadly as he disappeared into the boy’s dorm, where Kyu was waiting. Kyu looked at me and waved, too. I waved back and walked into the girls’ dorm.
As I walked in, I saw Jessica sitting on her bed, reading a book. She looked surprised. “Oh, hi, Eunhyuk-sshi! You’re back early. I thought I was the only one who wanted to come back.”
“No, my friends and I wanted to rest for tomorrow, Jessica-sshi. Uh, why are you early?”
“Oh, I thought I would get some peace and quiet.” She smiled. “But I think we should drop the sshi off our names, don’t you think?”
“Yeah.” Make friends with your roommate. And other girls, too. How?
“Um, Jessica, can I hang out with you tomorrow?” Yeah, it was good start.
“Sure.” She smiled at me. “I was going to ask you to join me today, but you were having trouble, I thought it was best to not ask you yet.” Trouble? Oh, it was the stupid bra thing. “Were you ok?”
“Yeah, I was fine.” I plopped on my bed. “What are your classes, Jessica?” I asked, trying to get to know her better.
“Oh, it’s singing, dance, and Chinese.” She looked at me. “What’s yours, Eunhyuk?”
“Um, dance, English, and science.” Jessica smiled. “I can help you with English if you want. I was born in the States.”
“Well, I know why you have an English name now,” I said, failing to make a joke. Jessica giggled. “Thanks for the offer, though. I’ll keep you in mind if I need help.” I grinned.
Just then, my phone rang. “Excuse me, Jessica.”
She nodded. “I’m going to make a few phone calls myself.”
I walked out of the room to answer it. “Hello?”
“HYUK!!!” The voice could be no one else except Teukie hyung.
“Hi, hyung.”
“Heechul, don’t grab the phone from me - Hello, my favorite dongsaeng. How’s the school? How are you?”
“Hi, Heechul hyung. It was good.”
“That doesn’t sound right. How can my dongsaeng have absolutely no problems on his first day of campus??” I pouted.
“Fine, I had…trouble…with my bra this morning.”
“PUAHAHAHA!! I knew it! It was a good thing I taught Sungminnie how to put it together, right?!”
“ What? Heechul, what did he say??”
“He didn’t know how to put on his bra.”
“I didn’t say that!” I protested, but I could already hear Teukie hyung’s “ang ang ang” laughter.
“Well goodnight, Hyuk. Do well in class, ok? Especially English!!” said Teukie hyung, still laughing.
“Good bye, my favorite dongsaeng. Sleep well, ok? I am going to get my beauty sleep,” said Heechul hyung.
“Bye, hyung.”
“Wait, Heechul don’t hang up -!” Beep. I sighed and returned to my room. Jessica was already sleeping, so I decided to change out of my clothes and into my pajamas. In the bathroom, of course. Tomorrow would be the first day of school. I sat down on my bed, stared off into space for five minutes, and then turned off the lights and tried to sleep.
That night, I had a weird dream. I dreamt of fire-breathing dragons chasing me, one certain dragon that seems to look a lot like Jessica.
* * *
I woke up early in the morning, an unusual event in my life. I looked over at Jessica, who was still sleeping, and at the clock. It was 5:32 a.m. My dance class starts at nine. I decided to get some more sleep.
After I slept for what seemed like the whole day, it was only 6:02. I decided to wake up and go to the dance studio first. Get some practice. After changing my pajamas to a pair of jeans and a comfortable T-shirt, I put on my wig and tied it in a ponytail, not caring enough to brush it. I tiptoed out the bathroom and out of our dorm, running across the lawn in the early dawn, over to the dance studio.
I breathed in excitement as I poked the key in the hole on the door to the studio. I opened it carefully and peeked in. It was a spacious room, all four walls are mirrors. I walked on the wooden floors to the speaker system and inserted a CD in. And began to dance.
For what seemed like an eternity, I was in my own world of dancing. Popping, moon walking, body waves, it was awesome, being able to dance away all the stress of worrying. About becoming a girl. If I was able to get in the university or not.
If I was going to get caught.
I danced for a while, more enjoying myself than just practicing. It must have been a long time since the sun was now up. I sat down to take a break and turned off the music. I lied down, closing my eyes and smiling to myself.
I heard footsteps.
I shooted upwards. GAH! I didn’t have permission to go practice this early in the morning! What if I get in trouble??!
The footsteps were nearer this time. I glanced at the door. I couldn’t go out without risking getting caught. I looked everywhere, trying to find a place to hide.
A small wardrobe caught my eye.
No time to be picky. I dashed towards it, banging my head as I try to fit in. Just as I closed the door behind me, the studio door slammed open.
Great, now I am like some heroine in some romance novel, hiding in a closet for fear of getting caught, I thought. Now she will proceed to spy on the newly entered character, who later will become her love interest in the story. What kind of situation is this?!
As I peeked through the little crack between the doors, I saw a boy with brown, soft hair glancing around at the studio. He closed the door gently as he came in, breathing hard, sweat trickling down his neck. What did he do, run a mile before coming here? I thought.
I saw him glance at the clock and pouted. Well, that’s the first time I can say a boy looked cute when he was pouting after I met Minnie, I thought. What the heck? I shook my head and continued my spying on the boy.
After studying him as he rested on the floor, I could say that he was about my age, has adorable eyes, a good figure. And when he pouts, he looks cute. Eh? What the heck… I continued to stare at him, thinking about random things. Wait. He was able to get into the studio. Don’t people need a key to be able to get in? I thought. So…he must be a dance student as well. There’s a good chance that he’s in my class.
He must’ve gotten his energy back, because he stood up and walked over to the CD player. He took out a CD from his backpack. Ah, he’s going to dance too. I wonder what kind of music is he going to play…oh, my CD is still there… I stared in horror as he picked up my forgotten CD and stared at it curiously. He glanced around the room.
Noooo! He suspects something! He knows I’m in here!!! Just as I was about to panic, he looked back at the CD player and placed my CD back in, putting his away. He pressed a button and the music began to play. Ah, this is so embarrassing, I thought as I watched him listen to my music. Suddenly, he stood up. And danced.
Now it’s twice as embarrassing because he dances even better than me.
I watched in awe as he danced, moving his whole body, showing so much emotion and passion. He smiled as he danced, and I could tell he loved dancing a lot. I saw no flaws, and if there were any, it was hidden away by the other powerful moves. He shined like a star.
He danced to my entire CD, and when my CD replayed, I swore I thought he had frowned. He turned off the music and ejected my CD. Ah, he’s taking it?! Just as I thought it, he took it out and put it in his backpack. He walked across the studio, glancing at random places.
“Uh, if you don’t mind, I am taking your CD,” he said. I stared in shock. He knows??!
“Don’t worry! Um, I’ll take care of your CD for you! Because if someone comes in, they might steal it. It’s really good,” he said, staring at a random place. I’m really glad that he can’t see me, my face is red from his praise.
He paced back and forth. “I assume you were here earlier than me, so if you come tomorrow, at the same time, I’ll give you back your CD.” He wants to meet me? My shock is turned to curiosity.
“So I guess I’ll say goodbye.” He walked to the studio door and opened it. Right before he left, he said, “Oh, I forgot. He smiled at the empty room and walked away.
I slowly stepped out of the wardrobe. He said class was canceled. Of course, he knew that only people with the key to the dance studio are the ones in dance class and can have access to it. He knew I was in the dance class too. But did he know if I was in here? I frowned and thought it over. He hadn’t said things like, I know you’re in here. But he talked as if I was able to hear him. I pouted. Wait.
Class was canceled today. If it hadn’t, you and I would’ve been late. Nooooo! He knew! He knew I was in here the whole time! I face palmed, red from embarrassment.
As I walked over to the door, a slip of paper caught my eye. Did he drop this? It wasn’t here earlier when I was dancing. I bent down and picked it up.
My name’s Lee Donghae.
Let’s meet soon.
I wanna see how you dance.
