2/18/11:
PRACTICE DAY!
Pushed myself hard during the first part of practice tonight...then we broke off to scrimmage. I was kind disappointed to discover that I wouldn't be able to...the beginning of the season, it was announced that those who hadn't passed their assessments wouldn't be allowed to scrimmage at all - which was really frustrating to me, because I thought I was learning so much from doing it...When Bonesaw arrived as our new coach, she encouraged Freshies to participate in everything, which I was all stoked about - but it seems we've reverted now to the original policy. Even Choka-Cola, who's already passed her assessments, was hangin' out with us in the corner of the rink tonight. Weird.
Anyway, happy to report that I didn't just phone it in, and kept sweating, kept working, kept refining skills. My falls are in good shape, even though recoveries could be a little quicker - I also tend to favor right knee falls...I can do a touch-and-go on my right knee (WOOT! Def. a major improvement from last year) but touch and goes with the left knee are...well...touch and go. o.0 Needs improvement.
Fortunately, stops, doubles, baseballs - all good.
Stuff I worked on that needs improvement and focus:
1) Crossovers (like always)
2) Opposite direction crossovers (Yikes.)
3) Skating backwards
4) Reversals and 180's. (Not 180 kneefalls - I'm good at those. Just straight up 180 toe stops / tomahawks.)
Another important thing I did today to be a better derby girl was show up EARLY - I was the FIRST one on the rink. Awesome. I love having a nice big empty open rink and just going "WHEEEEEEEEEEE" across it - remind me how fun it is to skate!
The MOST important thing I did today to be a better derby girl was blow the dust off this livejournal, and give it an important new function! Making a commitment, every day, in some small way, to make myself a better and better derby girl, and holding myself accountable by recording and reporting these efforts.
