However, if Japan is too far or out of your budget, Italy is accessible and not too daunting if you lack the language. It has tons of historical stuff, tombs to crawl around, museums to see. We found plenty of things to occupy our days, and had to cross stuff off of our list, and we were there for 8 days. I'm not sure how much flights should be then, though it should be ~600 per person (maybe more, as that's the start of tourist season). The euro isn't nearly as strong vs. the dollar as it was when we went, so you won't be screwed so much on accommodations or food. Of course, seeing as how its a honeymoon, I'm not sure if hostels would be the way to go.
I'm not big into cruises myself, but if you want something where most of your worries will be taken care of, that might be the way to go. You wouldn't see as many historical things, but I'm sure you could pick out a route that stopped in places that had ruins or forts or old colonial things on its itineraries. And you'd know, as soon as your purchase it, exactly how much you're paying.
Of course, you could -also- just look for a tour of just about any destination. It'd cost more, but tours will figure everything out for you. I have a friend who went with his wife to China and Tibet on a two week tour, and it sounded awesome.
*in truth, I believe Kyoto would be beautiful -any- time of year.

I think our plan is (for now anyway) to stay in the US, but Italy sounds cool (as does Spain...and I have the advantage of knowing Spanish, lol), and so does Japan (though I think I might starve there).
Eventually we'll decide...I think. San Francisco came up, but other than that, I dunno.
