went to florence this past weekend, muuuuuch better than venice, as far as a functional city goes, but hotter than hell. i got some real shopping done: sandals, skirt, shirt, and even a plug-power converter (which my dumb ass forgot to buy before i left). i saw super great art at the uffizi, including botticellis like la primavera and the birth of venus. carravagios medussa was a funny surprise too. i was quite impressed with a. lippis madonna and child, wowie. so delicate and luminous.
went to the big duomo (cathedral) with brunnalescis (pardon the spelling) famous dome, also saw his doors on the baptistery. i was quite impressed, what a smart bastard.
then onto the gardens. not great, but not bad. europeans tend to forgo flowers, so i mostly saw some really nicely maintained hedges. but there was a cool fountain of neptune... so i took a picture... and forgot that i was on a step... and then... dislocated my knee.
yeah. no, seriously, why would i lie about that? this shit hasnt happened in ten years, prior to surgery, so im pretty surprised myself. went to the civil hospital in venice yesterday, quite an experience. my super nice professor thought it was free (socialized medicine, what a concept), but than i got a bill for 63 euros. still, thats way cheaper than an x-ray and such in the states. they didnt tell me anything i didnt know already (and then all that was in italian), but they sent my prof. in the direction of the brace, should get that later today.
let me tell you, venice is a bitch to navigate with a bad knee. if i cant go to the sites, i dont much see why i should be here. i could get more done at a library with books in english, ja know.
so envy me not, folks.
more when it happens...
