preface: due to a lack of apostrophes in the italian language, plus the odd place for the shift button, all further correspondence from venice will be devoid of conjunctions, possessives, and capitalization.
so i am here. yippy and stuff. for the first three or four days i was having a bitch of a time setting up a phone and finding internet access (hence my annoyance and lack of enthusiasm). i have yet to find stamps, so postcards will be slow in coming. and do you know these mother fuckers take naps in the middle of the day? just when i have a break in the day to go grocery shopping, everything goes sleepy time and i am stuck with a bottle of water and my blinding rage. i could probably stand to eat more too.
on the upside, public transportation is in the form of a boat, which is a really nice change from new york subways. there are trees and flowers. shops are full of masks, jewelry, and bright fabrics. people hang their clothes out to dry with no concern of theft. i can get a cappacino pretty much whenever (but i do not think they have grasped the concept of to-go yet). oh, and this is huge, but i like my roommates and am actually making friends. funny that i have to leave the country to meet people in my own damn school...
all in all, it is pretty surreal here. things are quiet and calm. no one is really in a rush. the sky is big and the water is vast. and once again, i am surrounded by buildings older than my country- by a lot. i went to torcello, an island outside of venice but in the lagoon, and got to poke around an 11th century church with remnants of its 6th century foundation still intact. crazy. the mosaics glow, man. they sandwhich gold leaf in between two layers of glass, thus when the sun hits it the whole room has this otherworldly illumination to it. i will be checking out the glass-blowing island in the near future.
school is okay. i am learning, and some of it is on-site, as it should be. i walked out of the first italian language class because the teacher said she would be teaching the class in italian because her english was terrible. uh, yeah, no thanks. i get talked at in italian all day, i do not want to pay for it under the rouse or auspice of learning. i have, however, learned how to ask if something has meat in it. i can say gratzi like a badass too. i will thank the hell out of someone. everything else will fall into place, i guess.
pictures might have to wait until i get back. i am quite wary of getting anything processed here. oh, and if anyone wants to call, i do not have access to my voice mail (read= have not figured it out yet) so text me if it is important. and if we do talk, please bear in mind that your words cost 99 cents a minute. so make it count.
i miss my boyfriend. and friends. and family. and cat. but this is a very good learning experience.
