Wow. I have been completely humbled by the weather and farm work these last two days...
On Sunday it snowed about five inches, then it snowed another two last night. Now, seven inches is quick work with the tractor/plow, but I've only done it once and I'm not about to call L in NYC--there for a week plus working on a film/robot project--to tell him I got the tractor stuck/how do you reverse this thing/it ran out of gas/bla bla bla. No. I've got a healthy respect for that machine and no amount of snow is going to make me push a skill set I've only recently gained. I need more time on that thing in order to be confident and competent enough to run it by myself.
So yeah, the snow shovel and I have been getting to know each other. I think I've shoveled a total of eight hours over the past two days. Brutal work, man. My back and shoulders ache in that I've-really-done-some-hard-work way, but my hands are dead. They're past the point of ouch. I'm surprised I've typed this much, quite frankly. And there's no getting around shoveling either. There's a delivery due on Friday and next week the carpenter returns to work. I've got to have this house accessible. So, in lieu of the gym, I've been getting killed by farm work. I will be farm-strong very soon at this rate.
Today I took the giant farm truck on some errands because I got the car stuck briefly in the driveway last night. (I also have a healthy respect for that truck. Huge, it is.) L will be pleased that the recycling was accomplished in his absence. The birds have fresh seed too. And of course we were out of rock salt. Mainly though, my shitty landlord finally coughed up my security deposit (hi, I've been gone since the 2nd of Jan.), so I turned that into a full credit card payment (mainly moving expenses). It felt good to get that last NYC monkey off my back.
If tomorrow doesn't break me, I'm going to get back into the groove of cooking and working on the nonprofit company. Farm subsidies research is on my list too. Also, still hunting for something part-time and not too soul-sucking. Tricky in this state. Not exactly the bumpingest economy at the moment. Admittedly though, I haven't even flexed that ol' MS in Art History muscle at any schools or colleges. Better get the guts up for that. If I can shovel this insurmountable plot, I can shop an academic resume, no?
