Hate to Say I Told You So...

Well, tonight was the last coffeehouse Open Mic of the year (though next Thursday there will be an open mic connected with Living Proof) and I have to say it went rather well.  There was a good turnout, a lot of people performed, and some regulars I haven't seen in a couple months finally stopped by.  Highlights?  I backed up Heidi on "My Immortal" and "Set Me Free," two songs that I would never have played on my own.  It's good to step outside your bounds sometimes.  Alex O. made fun of pretty much everyone with the Max Wright Tribute Band.  There were a ton of repeat performances, and just about everyone wanted to use my guitar...

Which brings me to my next point; no amount of generosity goes unpunished.  Somehow the dead spot on my Jazzmaster's high E string fixed itself today, which created a sudden surge of creativity that allowed me to finally put some solid lyrics down on the new original (current working title, "You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat").  However, this lead to a number of mistakes.  First, I used the Jazzmaster for the open mic, which is not something I usually do because the Jazz is my full show guitar.  Being the last open mic of the year, I dragged it out for the occasion.  The biggest mistake was letting eight or nine people use it for their acts.  Somewhere along the line it lost another bridge screw, resulting in a dead spot on the B string that goes all the way up to the 7th fret!  To say I'm nonplussed is an understatement.  The Jazzmaster, which had become my signature guitar, is now out of comission for Living Proof, which really sucks because now it's looking like I might get a solo spot on the festival as well.  Here's hoping I can afford to get it back into the fray.

So new ground rule: I'm not lending my guitar out to anyone anymore.  At least not that one.  Being generous just creates a constant loop of people trying to borrow things from you, as evidenced by the well over half a dozen people who swarmed me looking for a guitar.  Well, ladies and gentlemen, you can start remembering your own goddamn instruments.

And on that note, Living Proof is this weekend, I'll see you there.
