I have spent the last 7 days less sober than I ever have in my life. Probably. Not that I'm complaining, but damn! Damn, damn.
The letter in the NY Press made my day. I must admit. I pitched an idea to them about doing a weekly column, sort of a punk rock Amy Sohn kind of thing. I know that's kind of wrong but it'd be good publicity for the band and I'd get my writing fix.
I used to get high all the time in Bakersfield. After awhile it got really boring because I'd be stoned and still in Bakersfield. Then when I moved to NYC it was such a major adjustment that being high was just not an option. I was already paranoid and on edge. The first time I went to Webster Hall, I felt like I was in hell. Isn't that funny? Webster Hall! And that was only a few years ago.
What I like about being stoned: the conversations and the laughing and the noticing of every tiny detail. How music sounds. When I'm high I can understand lyrics that I couldn't. I can hear bass lines that were buried before. The first time I heard the actual notes in a drum solo I was stoned. You can sing the drums-- they're tuned to certain notes. To quote WhoretoCulture's bfriend: "All your senses are expanded except the sense of .... uh .... remembering!" We fell off our chairs laughing at that.
WtC: "Why does the Ginger Ale say 'Decaffeinated!' on it. It's not like you can get regular Ginger Ale with the caffeine."
Me: "It's more like they're announcing it in a celebratory fashion. You should go into the store and say, I'm sorry, all I can find is the Decaffeinated ginger ale. Where's the regular?"
What I don't like about being stoned: it can get isolating if you're not careful. There's long druggie pauses that are annoying for those not high. You lose things. It takes twice as long to do anything. After awhile, being sober is so damn refreshing because your brain is functioning at full capacity and all your defenses are in place. Because it's been such a strange week, today, sober, I feel like a Major General in the army. Smart, strong, in command.
We'll see how long THAT lasts.
