I work in a police department too but only as a Superintendent's secretary so I'm not really involved with the charge office (jail cell side). It is a tough sentence and I'm pretty much winging it where the American legal system is concerned so I did't go into too much detail about Jensen's conviction for that reason. Because it would have been second-degree murder Jensen would have a chance of parole after 10-25 years. But seeing as Jensen is a key player in a high-profile prison gang and does have a record, I doubt he'd get granted parole.
But with the nature of prison, Jensen had to gain allies and join a gang in order to survive. There's a really good quote in the book which says "trying to make a decent human being out of someone by sending them to prison is like trying to make a Moslem by putting someone in a Trappist monastery...Prison is a factory which turns out human animals, the chances are that whatever you get out of prison will be worse than what you send in."
