Russell Baker Growing Up

On the first page and on the first line of Russell Bakers Growing up we are immediately told about his mother. This opens the book to a very strong sense of family. Not only will this book be about him but about his family as well. It takes place when his mother old and senile. he describes it as "some days she went to wedding and funerals..... On others she presided over family dinners cooked on Sundays." I think that the first time a character is introduced to you it is important to pay attention to the small details. First impressions are always the best.
Through the book we are given many examples of how his mother survived life. It started out when her husband died of diabetes. Then
