This is Halloween

Halloween was Thursday!

John and I carved pumpkins the day of and not before because we didn't want to set them outside and risk them getting smashed to bits. We each did two, all Adventure Time themed. Mine were Finn and Jake. John did seriously terrifying Lich and scary Marceline face.

I kind of thought from my British friends in Japan that trick or treating wasn't really a thing. Aaaand it is definitely LESS of a thing, but John warned me that if I was going to be home Thursday night, I had better get some candy ready. He said he didn't want to be home because sometimes the kids recite poems and stuff before taking the candy.

I didn't realize he meant EVERY child was going to either recite a poem, sing a song, tell me a joke, or do a magic trick. I appreciate that they were 'earning' the candy, but seriously, ::channels Fry:: shut up and take my candy. I just kind of stood there awkwardly while each child in the group took their turn to stand in the front and perform. After they had all finished, they just kind of looked at me. Not even a 'trick or treat'!! They were also surprised when I was trying to put a handful of candy into their sacks instead of me putting the bowl down for them to pick out a piece. Cultural differences!

After trick or treating was over, John, Jan, and I watched Alien, because I had never seen it. I thought I kind of knew a lot about it because it is referenced so heavily in other things, but I was pleasantly surprised by completely unspoiled elements that I didn't see coming. Excellent.

Yesterday, the three of us housemates all went to a flat party hosted by my Austrian girlfriends Martina and Sophie. So many German speakers! It was fun, though. Everyone was pretty cool and we even had a kind of 80's dance party things going on for a little bit, haha. I dressed up as the Hamburglar. Some people thought I was Zorro and I just had a McDonalds bag because I forgot to eat dinner before coming to the party. The other American got it, though. I actually happened to be the only one who understood his Dread Pirate Roberts costume, so it worked out. U-S-A! U-S-A! Jan dressed up in costumey lederhosen to be the überGerman, and John was Dr. House-- complete with orange prescription bottle of white tic tacs.

Now it is the weekend... the weekend I wish I were back in Karatsu enjoying kunchi and the balloon fiesta. Next time this year I will probably still be here. Someday kunchi! I'm coming back for you!
