life_and_times . I, too, am leaving out the more minor relationships.
Reasons Relationships Have Failed, in Autobiographical Order, From Age 19 to Present.
1. Don (NS, Canada): He went back to Canada. Eventually I went to Canada for 6 months. Then he wanted to go to Europe and try living in a monastery. Don left me. Heartbroken for years.
2. Dave (Sydney, Aust): We faded more with every bong hit. Met Jeff. I left Dave.
3. Jeff (CA, USA): I was bored and frustrated. I left Jeff when my visa was up.
4. Paul K. (Sydney, Aust): It just wasn't working. Too much pot. Mutual break-up. He wanted me back but I didn't go back. I left Paul.
5. Dave again: I loved that guy but the problems were the same. Too much pot and ennui. Also, I met Paul M. I left Dave.
6. Paul M. (Sydney, Aust): Gorgeous, wonderful Paul M. (RIP) Left him when I met John in rehab.
7. John (Sydney, Aust): Awesome, fun John (also RIP). Broke up with him due to guttersnipe lifestyle I could no longer bear. Such an adventure though. I left him.
8. Todd (Madison, WI): I left him (a few months after I'd come home from Madison) in the wake of September 11. Flight cancelled, best friend died out of the blue, a lot of shit happened. Remember when the whole (Western) world was depressed? I left him.
9. Stan (Devizes, UK): Hahahahaha! Stan. We have a gubbins drawer in our kitchen named for Stan. Bless. I broke up with him when the lies and deceit were revealed. In fact, not even then! A bit afterwards. It was sort of mutual though, I guess. Just a completely untenable situation in light of what happened.
10. Todd again (USA → Aust): Married him! Best - albeit belated - decision I ever made.
I feel like I'm leaving someone out but I'm probably not. I can see a pattern I thought was paler than it is: leaving boyfriends by hopping straight to the next one. You don't have to touch ground when you do that. After John I made a concerted effort not to do that anymore, and I didn't. Between Stan and Todd I spent 3-4 years on my own, my longest break since I was 19.
I hope this has been fascinating.
