Watched the series premiere of 'New Girl' tonight and I have to say of all the new series that have so far come out (and that I've seen via the internets or through dvr), this pilot is by far my favorite. There are a few that I have yet to see, but I'm slowly making the rounds. I am giving 'Ringer' approximately 3 more episodes to get more interesting out of sheer allegiance to Sarah Michelle Gellar, but good lord some of that pilot was just...well it was awful all around, like soap opera bad.
Anyway, Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day was honestly adorable and I really hope this show does well. I hope that since it follows 'Glee', it at least has a strong enough lead-in to attract an audience week after week. While I didn't appreciate the over-saturation by the morons over at Fox marketing leading up to the show, it did seem to live up to its very cute and funny pilot potential. I love her nerd girl glasses, the way that she randomly makes up and sings little songs to herself and totally has off-and-on social skills. Her surprise strip-tease gone hilariously wrong was awesome ("I'm doing sexy things with the pla-ant...") and totally made me giggle as did this exchange between Jess and the strangely-likeable douchebag Schmidt:
Schmidt: Hey Jess, how you doing? You look fantastic. Listen, what if you came out with us tonight you know, after work. We'll fix you up, we'll take you out, we'll get you a rebound.
Jess: A Rebound?
Schmidt: Yeah.
Jess: I don't know if I'm ready.
Schmidt: You're totally ready for it. I'll take you through the whole thing. I'll be like your guide.
Jess: Like Gandalf through Middle Earth?
Schmidt: Probably not like -- Ok -- First of all, let's take the Lord of the Rings references and put them in a deep, dark cave, where no one's gonna find them. Ever.
Jess: Except Smeagle. He lives in a cave.
All I can say is that I hope they let her character continue to fly her nerd flag high!
And finally...I think every apartment should have a douchebag penalty jar.
