Six of Crows - I Love It and Also Recs

Feb 11, 2017 18:31

I have been felled by the plague thanks to D carrying it home. He's feeling better today (or, at least, he was until he left to probably go and overdo it - we'll see how he feels when he gets back) while I'm officially in day 1. Yay.

[ETA: He's home, his fever has re-surged, and he's taken tomorrow off. I've mercilessly assigned him dish duty when his fever breaks.]

On the bright side, I'm posting recs which would definitely not be happening if I weren't ignoring a half a dozen projects on my to do list. Eh, they'll keep. I've separated out the Six of Crows recs to avoid spoiling anyone because EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS SERIES AND THEN COME TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.

Anyway! My library hold on Six of Crows came up last week and I ended up finishing it in about a day and a half and then made it less than 12 hours before purchasing the sequel, Crooked Kingdom. In CK I made it to 49% before cracking and having to skim ahead, but ftr I did go back and do a proper reading all the way through. This all resulted in rummaging through AO3 for fic before I'd technically finished the book (it was a, uh, thorough skimming) because that's how I roll. The only faint criticism I can offer up is that the text insists the main characters are all 2-5 years younger than they actually are and that was occasionally worth a double take, but with that mental age remapping I am seriously in love with them in all their broken glory. The two recs below have minor spoilers for the series considering where the first book leaves off.

These are a couple of my favorites, but you can find currently about 8 more on Pinboard at the confluence of my Six of Crows and Rec tags.

Warm Hands by
ashesandhoney [Kaz/Inej, PG-13, 1,735 words]
Summary: Inej comes home from a long sea voyage.
Rec Notes: Fluffiness on the theme of the summary. Somewhat oddly, it's the beginning that stands out most to me here - the portrayal of Kaz's increasingly shorter patience as Inej's return is delayed, the minor details of how he misses her arrival. It's possible the reunion is sweeter for it, but I really think that's lovely as well in its own right.

devil side by
liminal [Kaz/Inej, PG-13, 3.175 words]
Summary: "And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you"- Nietzsche

The Wraith is more than a ship, and survivors run from the fray telling stories of a girl allied with the darkness, whose knifework is something unholy, who will stoop to nothing and do anything, everything.

In Ketterdam, Kaz feels the wind changing.
Rec Notes: What to say of this other than it is perfect? Inej struggles to walk a line between saving lives and taking them. Kaz endures her absence more transparently than he (or those in the Barrel, for that matter) might wish. When Inej earns a new-old nickname and bears the dark cloud it casts back home to Ketterdam, it is Kaz who lances the wound on her heart and bandages it over.
