Delicious Changes (or Implosion, take your pick)

Sep 27, 2011 12:37

If you haven't seen it yet, fortify yourself well with your chosen beverage before you click over. Network pages are gone, I only have, what, 40 bookmarks showing although it says I still have 4,356, there are no tag bundles, which have always been a Delicious selling point, subscriptions are gone (possibly replaced by stacks), and it's a hell of a clusterfuck, all considered. Oh, and RSS feeds are dead.

I'm really glad that I took the precaution of exporting my Delicious bookmarks the day before the transfer deadline. I've cautiously bookmarked a few since then, but I can re-save them without a problem. I've already cleared out my Pinboard account of what was there and re-imported my Delicious file, so that all my bookmarks are there and updated and that's where any future ones are guaranteed to be.

I do have an account at Diigo, but they've never fixed the importing bug wherein my bookmark descriptions are truncated to the old 255 characters limit, even though Diigo can handle more than that. No way am I manually fixing 4,356 bookmarks, so this is a serious problem!! I'm not the only one who's had it, according to this forum post. As someone there mentioned, it's probably just a scripting error, which makes it even more annoying that no one's fixed it. (I also filed a support request months ago, but never heard anything back.)

As for Pinboard, it does now have some networking! You have to be able to go to their page directly (mine is here: bluemeridian), but then you can subscribe to them and have them display on a network page. (TELL ME if you have an account so that I can subscribe to you.) You can also subscribe to people anonymously and there are RSS feeds available as well. Pinboard has a one time sign-up fee that gradually inches up as more users come onboard (to cover increasing server costs) which is currently $9.42. No ads, comfortably familiar interface but cleaner, and just generally awesome.

Pinboard's tweets have been both useful and kind of hilarious. I'm partial to:
"@charlieorford it would have been easier for @chad_hurley to just send me a personal check, but this is quite nice too"
"I filed a support request with AVOS to clarify what's going on with feeds. I'm sure I'll rise right to the top of the queue :-)"
"@oftenimprudent no hierarchy, but I'm open to tag bundles if I can figure out how to do them right. Also open to tag subs (but why not rss?)"
"@lynseydesign you might want to take a look at trunk.ly and zootool as well. Lots of alternatives, fortunately!"

Speaking of @oftenimprudent, they're recording an emergency /Report today re:Delicious, so that may well be worth tuning in for.
