I'm well aware of the controversy that surrounded Vegas when it aired -- protestations that it wasn't team oriented enough for the next to last show from the finale, especially. I was watching little of the show at the time so I passed over much of the grousing and went on. Today, I ended up watching it and I have to laugh at all the complaining in retrospect.
For one, it's important to remember that it was a surprise to all the cast and crew that the show wasn't renewed. For another, that news came partway through what would be their final season. The long trek from script to securing locations to filming to post production had likely already begun, and even if it were still in the concept stage there was no reason to change it; why not, after all, at least get another fun episode in?
The episode was wonderful! It was bloody well AU fanfic! Good AU fanfic, no less, albeit with an ambiguous ending that you could take as you wished as far as Sheppard's fate went. You could argue that Rod (and we assume this is Rod from the AU in McKay and Mrs. Miller) referenced a Sheppard in his own universe that was most definitely not this Sheppard, but... well, we are assuming. Just because one Rod went through a gap in the space-time continuum or whatever Trek term we're borrowing, doesn't mean it couldn't have happened in another pair of universes as well. After all, everyone referred to him as Rodney, not Rod, which could a) be a break in continuity, b) have been an affectation of the character while in the alternate (to him) Atlantis, or c) be perfectly normal in a universe that we've not actually seen before.
The big thing is that it sets up a reason for a Wraith attack on Earth, even in an entirely different dimension, where they may have little or no warning (no, I haven't seen Enemy at the Gate either, but that's irrelevant to the possibilities).
So, yes, I liked it. *g* I'm a McShep girl, which there wasn't an over the top amount of here, and I'm not a big fan of Shep in quite that much disarray, but it fit the character (who took the money with him and regardless of his impromptu owning up to Rodney or extenuating circumstances, that's still hilarious). If it were a fic, I'd already have bookmarked it and be writing up the rec. :P
I'm a wee bit perturbed that this was the only pic I could find of Rodney
from the episode (besides one through the blue of the Wraith's holding cell)
after 20+ minutes with Google. *huffs*
