What did you do this weekend?

This was another one of those weekends where I go to an ex-WW2 airfield and sleep in a lorry for fun.

OK, so that was a slightly odd way to look at it. This weekend was the MSA National Finals at Santa Pod, and it was the first time in absolutely ages that we have gone to the track with a car that is ready to run - we've been putting the car together for 3 years and at the last meeting where we tried to debut the car we had too many niggling problems.

The weather was a little damp on the way down on Friday, but after a fantastic lasagne prepared by tanurai and a bit of kip we passed scruitineering (after one minor amend) on Saturday morning, and waited for the track to be dry enough to run. At about 12 noon we pulled round for our first pass - as my brother (Adam, who was driving this weekend) is still gaining his license it was to be an observed run, just a burnout and a launch to 60ft.

This went absolutely flawlessly, he had a good reaction time of 0.022 and a 1.458 60 ft. We waited for the call for our second run (we were scheduled to get 3 on Saturday) and towed down the fire up road, only for the heavens to open. 1000 horsepower in the wet on slicks is definitely not a good idea, so we went back to the pits. The rain never really abated, so that was it for the day and we decided to cook dinner (roast pork this time) and fit some accessories to the car (wing mirrors and rear lights since you ask).

It rained and rained overnight, given I was sleeping 3 feet below the thin fibreglass roof of the truck I was woken by it on several occasions, and even thunder once or twice. At 9am though there was even some sight of the sun in the sky. We towed down again this morning, and... it rained again. Eventually we decided enough was enough, packed up and went home. The meeting was called off due to bad weather while we were packing.

So all in all not a great days racing, but at least we know the new motor works and all we have to do is get mine and my brothers race licenses signed off, which will take 5 passes from now - he has 2 left to do and I have all 3.
