Graceful end today to the German team's WorldCup 2006 experience. They beat Portugal 3:1. Which means 3rd place at least {even though nobody cares about the runner ups}.
They did not lose any of their matches except the most important one. Still frustrating to think about but from what I hear, it's also been handled gracefully inside the country, with many German fans actually celebrating *with* the Italians despite the loss. I think it's safe to say that hosting the Cup has been a success, and hopefully this will leave a positive impression with some people who saw that the place isn't just about all these perceived stereotypes. Germans don't know how to party? Ehhh, hello? Whoever thinks that clearly has never set foot into the country, or met any locals. I'm proud of how it all went & looked from afar. And feel there's no reason not to express it. Goooooo, Germany!! =) Maybe next time, it will be their turn again.
On a just slightly different note I heard that Klinsmann (coach of German team) lives just a few miles from me, and that his wife Debbie is actually Chinese-American. I didn't know either. I also found this article that has some interesting culture-related stuff in it, albeit very one-sided as usual (well, it's 'USA Today') but really quite interesting:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/world/2005-12-07-klinsmann-cover_x.htm As planned, I didn't do a thing today. Didn't go anywhere farther than the mailbox and the grocery store to fetch some basics for the weekend. Didn't cook, just had some delicious baguette sandwiches and sinful foods like Elephant Ears and the new Lay's Sensation Red Chili & Sour Cream Chips (Very good, btw, and way too addictive! Must stop buying!). Now I just hung up with the Main Man who called from a layover in Scotland. I'm sure he was glad to find me home on a Saturday night as he's away, lol. No such luck the last time around. I'm still wanting to take it easy while he seems to be getting more serious. I'll have to see where this is going... And where I want it to be.
