Road to NYCC: Wigs

So its the beginning of September so of course its time to start thinking about NYCC and cosplay. I’m planning on bringing back my Mystique costume.  As well as a few others but only two involve wigs at least so far.

First up Mystique.

I’ve only ever worn this costume in New York during the Halloween Parade so it will be interesting to ride the subway in blue from head to toe. As you can see from the above photos the wig wasn’t in great shape. it was  horribly damaged but could use some TLC.

So I decided to use a wig washing tutorial I had picked up from Tumblr.  It was a mix of tutorials, but the basic idea was, Cold Water, a dedicates cleaner (I used Eucalan), Fabric Softener/Conditioner, Time, and a Wide Tooth comb.  My wig is 100% synthetic from Ricky’s and can be found here

Firs up was a cold water wash with Eucalan, then a 6 or so hour soak in hair conditioner (I may have forgotten about it for a while); lastly, it was rinsed clean and left to dry overnight before I brushed it out.

It is now brushed and ready for action. I just have to re attach the skull at the front and I even made myself some earrings.  I may spray paint the skulls white and change the beads to yellow or white but I doubt anyone will see them through the wig.  I will have to figure out some better long term storage but that is a problem for a later day.

So the first step towards NYCC is done.  And we know if I want to resurrect Storm, the Mohawk is ready and waiting.  Perhaps I should take an inch or six off the top.

So far the convention is shaping up to be a mix of universes:

  • Thursday - Dalek or Marvel Dress
  • Friday - Dr. Martha Jones
  • Saturday - Mystique
  • Sunday - Punk Storm
