His heart raced as he turned to see her, his eyes lighting up for the first time in so long. “You’re here,” he breathed in disbelief, stepping tentatively towards her, almost as if she’d fade away if he moved to fast.
Tara fidgeted nervously with the edge of her winter coat, the toe of her boot digging into the bits of snow that still covered the bridge. “We made a promise.”
“I was worried…”
“Me too.” Looking up at him she hugged her arms to her body. “Sorry I’m late.”
“Better late then never.” She nodded, silence falling over both of them. Their eyes moved everywhere but to each others, both of them looking for tell tale signs of a new life, a new someone.
Finding neither Lindsey let out a small sigh of relief, finally inching his way towards her, feeling every bit of his gritty Wolfram and Hart past fall away, leaving him seventeen again, only more nervous. “Came back for you, not gonna leave without you this time.”
“Lindsey…”
“Tara.” He pressed his fingers over her lips and tipped her head up to meet his eyes as he spoke cautiously. “Tell me you didn’t miss me and I’ll leave.”
There was a long pause that felt like it stretched over forever, his heart slowing down as if the noise of its beating would make him miss her answer.
“I missed you,” she whispered, a smile finally tugging at her lips. Relief washed over him as her arms wrapped around his waist, the warmth of her body pouring into his and making him feel alive and whole again.
“Don’t wanna hurt you.” His hands were on either side of her face, smoothing her hair away from her eyes; blue meeting blue with such intensity that would have brought any man to his knees.
She shook her head, silky strands falling over his fingertips. “You won’t.”
“I will.” His heart started to speed up, everything inside him moving on a sea of emotion. “So much has changed. I’ve changed.” His tone was ominous and warning to the things he had done in their time apart; his evil dealings and the selling of his own soul.
He felt her arms tighten around him as she tipped her face up closer to his. “I know; so have I.” Finding himself bathed in the sunlight of her smile he finally let go all of his defenses, all of his struggle to keep her away.
“I’ll try not to, I’ll try so hard baby…” Any further words were silenced as her lips met his. The sweetness of her lip-gloss making him remember what it was like to be seventeen again…
A white hot shock of pain jolted Lindsey out of his unconscious state, his eyes flying open to see nothing but the stone and cement walls that became his daily prison.
He screamed and gritted his teeth hard as the four fingered hand dug into his chest, wrapping around his heart and tugging slowly to prolong the pain. Fresh bolts of agony shot through his body as each valve of his heart was constricted by the pressure of the fingers in his chest. His life flashing before his eyes and making him realize he hadn’t yet lived for himself, everything was for someone else and someone else’s gain; never his own.
The sickening wet pop of each vein and artery filled his ears, blood pumping from his dying heart and blurring his vision as it splattered his face. Lindsey clenched his teeth harder, the pain becoming almost too much, the muted crack of one of his back molar’s cracking from the pressure echoed in his ears.
As the light began to fade away from his eyes he hoped beyond hope that this wasn’t the last feeling he’d ever feel. Even in his darkest hour he hoped he’d see her face again and those eyes that could heal a heart even as damaged as his.
