Pulling his jacket tighter around him, Lindsey tried to block out the cold that had seeped into his bones after the second hour of standing at the bridge. She said she’d be here; she’s always kept her promise. Ever since…

Ever since they were younger.

Lindsey knew her from back home, back when things were as sweet and innocent as she was. He remembered her sweet smile and shy eyes. Even after ten years he knew that he would remember her anywhere. He couldn’t help but wonder if she would him, time was no friend of his and there were some mornings he would stand in front of the bathroom mirror after a shower and wonder who was staring back at him.

Childhood scars were no longer where his eyes fell, they fell to scars that littered his body, battle scars and scars of survival. Most of them were covered in tattoo’s that marked his chest, that kept him hidden just that much longer to keep his heart beating.

He’s been hiding under Wolfram and Hart’s radar for more than two years now, only the occasional demon uncovering who he was. They never had the chance to blow the whistle on him, he made sure of that. Months of training in Tibet as well as many near death encounters turned him into the man he was today.

All he had to do was think of her and he was that same seventeen-year-old grubby faced boy back in Oklahoma who was more than a little smitten with his friend’s younger sister.

Not that him and Donnie stayed friends for long. Being a bad ass and raising hell around town was one thing but the way Donnie treated his sister was something he couldn’t stand. Maybe it was because of how protective he was over his younger sister Anna.

Every chance he got he ran into her, always attempting to pull her off somewhere just to get time alone with her, keeping her away from the people he couldn’t protect her from. They talked about everything, confiding in each other about things they knew others would laugh at. It wasn’t long before he noticed that she didn’t stammer around him anymore, she’d smile from head to toe when she talked to him and her hopefulness for things to come made him believe just that much more that things could get better.

Back in Tibet after his body healed from the tattoo’s he finally knew what she always talked about, the power and energy one person can poses. His mind also ran over the lessons she taught him of controlling such power.

He was away at school when he found out about her mother. Risking a failing grade so close to the end of the term to go and see her, make sure she was alright. The look in her eyes haunted him to this day, that sad look of being so lost was all he could see and he knew he couldn’t leave without knowing she was alright.

“Come back to school with me,” he pleaded. “You can take classes and live in the apartment with me. We’ll both start a new li-”

“I c-can’t.”

“Yeah you can. You can’t stay here.” Lindsey’s hand brushed away the hair from her shoulder, revealing to him the dark bruised finger prints on her shoulder. His blood would have boiled if he wasn’t so worried for her safety, staying here alone would get her nothing but hurt.

“I’m not, I’m leaving soon. I’m going to do what mamma never could. Find myself.” Lindsey parted his lips to speak but she silenced him with her finger, resting her forehead against his and sighing softly, her voice shaking as she spoke. “I’m never gonna see you…”

He surprisingly pressed his lips against hers for the first time since they met; quieting the words he knew was true. “I’ll see you. I can’t not.” Pulling back he brushed her hair from her eyes. “Name the time and place and I’ll be there. I promise.”

Ten years at the tenth hour of night at the bridge overlooking the river. It was the place they would run to when they needed someone, more often than not each other.

Looking down at his watch and then back at the one set of footprints in the snow leading from town Lindsey sighed, realizing it was nearly midnight as his heart sank. He wondered if she forgot or her life was so drastically different she couldn’t look back to the cowboy from back home.
