( Two Weeks Minus a Day)

***

John doesn’t realize that he’s broken something ‘till about a month after it’s too late.

He knew Dean had gotten himself twisted up over some piece of tail, but that was a normal thing for boys his age. Hell, John had had a couple of those starry-eyed puppy loves before he found Mary. It was part of growing up. But puppy love is not something that you stop your life for. And life for Dean, and for him, is hunting.

Hunting is just about the only thing Dean seems to enjoy, after Athens. He doesn’t hit the bars like usual, and he hustles pool with a detached efficiency that’s just as troubling. So maybe John underestimated whatever happened in Athens, but he still thinks his son needs to snap out of it. Someday, Dean will know what love really is, what John had with Mary.

“Redhead over there’s checking you out,” he says a few weeks later, in a bar he forgets the name of celebrating their latest hunt being over. It’s pretty embarrassing for both of them that he’s trying to be Dean’s wingman, but the best break up remedy is getting back on the horse, and Dean’s not making the effort by himself.

“Eh,” Dean says dismissively. But later, John sees him leave the bar with his hand on the girl’s waist, so he must have thought more of her than that, after all.

“Well, what was her name?” John asks when they stop for gas the next day.

“Don’t even know,” Dean says, smiling wide like it’s a victory.

It’s then that John realizes he’s broken something. Because when did his boy become the sort who goes for anonymous fucks just because he can? Then again, how did John think Dean was going to find love like he did with Mary? At a dive bar, when he knows they’ll be gone within the week? John is suddenly aware of how much space he’s put between his eldest and normal. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to run to California to be happy.

“Found a job up in Ohio,” John offers as soon as he’s found a lead that makes it not a lie. “We could swing by Athens.”

Dean snorts derisively, his expression carefully blank. “What’s in Athens?”

And that’s when John figures out that he’s a month too late.
