So I was expecting Show to give me at best a mediocre episode after last week’s extravaganza, because that’s just sort of how it rolls… but I then this week’s episode? Pushed aaalll my buttons in the best possible way. (cut for incoherent squee)
I mean, we start with the more gruesome opening since EVER, along with the deconstruction of a holiday like we haven’t had since “A Very Supernatural Christmas.“ Continue with the brothers acting like they actually LIKE one another (worried!Sam, whee! Be my valentine!!), add a couple great quotes (Unleash the kraken!? Unattached drifter Christmas!?!) and mix with a dose of black humor (the leg twitch after the office shooting and the ”now prison maybe”= loling forever). Top off with a great bit character (the awesomesauce coroner and his hat!) and then garnish with insta-Castiel, all elbows deep in gore, and eyeing up Dean’s meat. Oh man. And this is ALL BEFORE THE FIRST COMERCIAL BREAK OMG. And it just keeps going! I don’t like it.” “No one likes it,” Castiel comforting the Cupid, and the callback to Becky’s fanfic, and Cas moving the armoire one handed! Heck, just the fact that Castiel was actually an integral part of the entire episode, and that Misha got to make more than one expression. And the way JA delivers the “coo-coo for cocopuffs” line was perfect!
But as great as the humor was, even the serious bits totally work for me. John and Mary being “destined” through angelic intervention? Deeply discomforting continuity with Michael’s monologue last week, ftw! And Dean actually asking Sam if he’s okay, and sounding like he cares, and the talking in sync? It warms my heart. Plus Famine was super creepy and I actually liked the ridiculous secret service style demons. I loved seeing scary-effective evil!Sam, even though it was wrenching to see him fall of the wagon. Dean’s expressions while Sam was using his powers were tragic, but it was so awesome that Sam didn’t give in at the end- go Sam! And of course, there was Dean’s big scene with Famine. Oh man. Hello, Dean’s overwhelming depression and suicidal ideation. We haven’t really seen you this up close and personal since season two I think. But I like me some hurt!Dean, so I don’t even mind the anvils. It mirrored Sammy’s heart to heart with War, anyways. And maybe I’m just naïve, but I really would have sworn that Dean was going to say “Yes” there at the end. That would have been a heck of a cliff hanger… and speaking of which, hiatus?! AGAIN!? Kripke is trying to kill me.
Wrote this drabble-fic thing a while ago, but posting it as it seems relevant to this last ep… (
Tit for Tat)
