TOPH toph I know where you're coming from with the crushes and insecurity thing. I've been trying to pay more attention to Toph and it's like. GIVE HER MORE SCREEN TIME GODDAMNIT :'( I think she's moved on a little bit from being totally self conscious about her looks because lately (even before The Runaway) she's realized how much she misses her parents, and dealing with that is even more of an issue for her. All her life she thought she hated her parents being so over protective and now that she finally got away and is SEEING THE WORLD and everything I think she's kinda like, "n-no WHAT. I got what I wanted, I shouldn't be missing home. Well you know what I DON'T MISS HOME. >("

But back to the looks thing! The only time we see it come up is in Tales of Ba Sing Se and that's sad. :'( Where the bitchy girls made fun of her on the bridge and then she owned them righteously, I think that's just her response to everything. VIOLENCE. She's like that one friend who always hits a little too hard, but I'm not talking about the punching and Sokka-launching. When she and Katara got into that huge fight in The Chase, Toph sends Katara flying after she says something mean and retarded about her not being able to see. SO. I think anybody who messes with Toph is gonna end up hurt, and even if it's an insecurity thing, it's not gonna change much? I DON'T KNOW why is this so long

BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT MAYBE, it's true that Katara was the first person who ever told Toph she was pretty (...which means it wasn't her mom which makes me wibble :'(), I think she'd still react kind of the same way, just like "...thanks" etc. etc. etc. but the conversation would go on and she'd just REMEMBER THE COMPLIMENT later and be like "...:D" or something.
