The Good News -- Meet Skimbleshanks.

"He will watch you without winking and he sees what you are thinking
And it's certain that he doesn't approve
Of hilarity and riot, so the folk are very quiet
When Skimble is about and on the move.
You can play no pranks with Skimbleshanks!
He's a Cat that cannot be ignored;
So nothing goes wrong on the Northern Mail
When Skimbleshanks is aboard."

T.S. Eliot, Ol' Possum's Guide to Practical Cats

I've been keeping a secret from you, oh LJ, for quite some time. Several months ago, before all this trauma occurred, we decided that in the future (likely around the end of this year) we could get an Oriental shorthair kitten from a local breeder. We vetted the breeder, who takes fantastic care of their cats and actively shows and health tests. Their cats are ridiculously friendly -- walking in the house they swarm you and demand love and attention and petting and play. They are honestly some of the most astounding cats I've ever seen.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, they decided that one of their breeding and show prospects wasn't going to work out and needed to be placed in a pet home. We saw his picture and decided on the spot that we needed to meet him. When we walked through the door, he climbed onto one of our shoulders and made himself at home.

We're still introducing him to the dogs slowly, but he's already fine with all the cats. Gypsy is in LOVE and plays with him and follows him around. It's quite astonishing. Gus thinks he's okay, and Fetch and Rufus are somewhat dubious but accepting.

From his first night home:

Meeting Miss Charlotte. (Ignore the raw spot by her eye, she got bitten by something and scratched it raw. It's healed now, but it looks awful in this picture.)

This is what he looks like when he's 'helping' you at the computer.

He's guarding his rolled up paper ball from Gus. He also plays fetch -- even delivers the ball to hand, and if you're not playing adequately, he leaps into your lap and drops the ball so that you're aware that he'd like you to throw it. It's like owning a 7 pound lab.

He has a gloriously spotty belly.

He lost his ball under the buffet, so he went and retrieved it.

One evening, we had an impromptu play session with the cat fishing pole. Gus would like to point out that he weighs ten pounds more than the tinycat.

Also that he's ridiculously fluffy.

Gypsy says 'Pick me, pick me!'

Skimble does a lovely meercat impression.

Gus is SO FLUFFY.

A very frightening demon has possessed Gypsy.

It got Skimble too.

This is such a bad picture, but Gypsy's face says 'Uh, what?' (Yes, he has little kitten balls in this picture -- they were removed this morning. :))

Gus says "Still fluffy!"

So, that's the good news. I will try to avoid more bad news in the future.
