Did someone say children and morally righteous types? Because right now Fletcher was in the courtyard, trying to get some fresh air and forget what had happened the day before.
He'd survived, and from what he'd heard no one else had died either. It had just been really scary. Were all of the "performances" going to be like that? But what would have happened if his team hadn't guessed the right word? He couldn't stop thinking about that, imagining the rope around his neck choking the life out of him...
He stopped walking and tugged at the collar around his neck. Even that was too tight for him after that event. He was too busy thinking about that to notice that there was someone else sitting on the bench right by where he was standing.
The Dark Ace probably wouldn't have noticed anyone passing him by had said person decided not to stop almost directly in the path of his sulking scowling. The sudden interruption made him blink and turn to face whoever it was. Unfamiliar, at least to a certain degree; it was likely he'd seen the kid wandering around the prison before and just never bothered to place him in his memory.
"Get out of the way," he said, none too gently, and then very nearly rescinded his own words when he did a double take on seeing exactly how tall this kid was. "Hold on - how old are you?"
What possible crime could someone who didn't even look like they were out of elementary commit that would condemn them to death?
Ten? Ten? All right, at ten he hadn't exactly been a paragon of virtue, but he also hadn't committed a crime bad enough to get him grounded, much less condemned to death. Then again, she had been committing all sorts of crimes by ten, so it was entirely possible. He stared at the kid with a mixture of general dislike, irritation, and some curiosity. Part of him wondered if he was facing down a very young criminal mastermind.
Most of him realized that nobody that young was going to be that good an actor, stuttering and flinching away from the slightest sound. Still ...
"You're ten years old and on death row? What did you do?" The Dark Ace was honestly curious about that much, at least.
