Genesis 25

Ok, so now we have come to the end of Father Abraham's life. Now the story shifts to his son Isaac. Issac's wife Rebekah becomes pregnant, they find out that they are expecting twin boys. There are there are three main problems that are about to happen for us to learn from. While the boys are still in the womb Rebekah can feel a battle between them raging on inside her. She takes her concern to God and he tells her that they are fighting over the birthright. The birthright is usually given to the first born son. This means that at the end of the fathers life he will give the son the majority of his inheritance, that he will become head of the household and the most respected member of the family, and that he would receive blessing from his father and from God. But as we saw from Ishmael and Isaac it is Gods decisions who gets the blessing. God tells Rebekah that the older would serve the younger. God had chosen Jacob to be the son, through whos line Jesus Christ would be born. When the boys were born Esau came first followed by his brother who came out with his hand around Esau's foot, as if he where trying to hold him in. Because of this he was named Jacob which means "heel catcher" and also means "trickster or cheater". The first problem we are going to see is Jacob trying to take matters into his own hands to accomplish Gods promises. The second problem we see is that each of the parents are showing favoritism to one of the boys, their house is divided. As the boys grew Esau became a hunter and a manly man, while Jacob was kind of a wimp and a mama's boy. Isaac favored Esau and Rebeka favored Jacob. The third thing we come across is when Esau gives up his long-term pleasure and security for a petty and temporary need. Esau comes in from working and he is starving, Jacob has a pot of stew cooking. Esau sees that he can have what he wants now, with no thought to the long-term consequence of the trade he is about to make. Jacob again takes matters into his own hands and deceives Esau into exchanging his birthright for a bowl of stew. Later on in Hosea 12:2 it makes an example out of Jacob, how he wrestled with God being in control. We will see Jesus come down and literally wrestle him and to teach him to trust Him. But for now he remains a trickster with trust issues.
