Genesis chapter 17

God revealed Himself to Abram and calls him to obedience. He tells him to walk before him and be blameless. God then establishes his covenant with him and changes his name to Abraham. What this shows is that when you give you life to God he changes you. He takes out your heart of stone a gives you a new heart. So he changes his name to Abraham, wich means father of many, representing what he was going to do for him. Before his name meant exalted father, an ironic name for a man who desperately wanted a son but could not have one. Then God tells Abraham what he must do to recognize the covenant. God tells him to be circumcised and mto circumcise all off the males born in his household. This is much like baptisms for us today. It is just an outward expression of an inward decision for God. Then God changes Sarai's name to Sarah and tells Abraham she will give him a son by her. Abraham laughs at God thinking how crazy it sounds that a 100 year old man would have a child with his 90 year old barren wife. God obviously has a sense of humor cause he tells Abraham to name him Isaac, which means He laughs. God says you don't believe me, I'll get the last laugh. He tells God that Ishmael was his first born and asks him to bless him. God tells him that Isaac will be the promised child in which Jesus would come from, but he promised Abraham he would bless Ishmael and make his descendants fruitful. So Abraham circumcised himself and all of the males in his household.
