So I'd like to declare a moratorium on the word "smirk" in all Grey's Anatomy fanfic. Seriously, Alex and Sloan have other facial expressions. They don't smirk with every sentence, thought, or action. Yes, they smirk more than the other characters, but that doesn't mean it's all they're capable of.
And yes, I realize that in my own 11-part Alex/Izzie fic, Alex does smirk several times. (I know no one has read it yet since it's still at the beta's, but I also know if I don't make this disclaimer now, then someone will give me crap after reading it.) But it's only a handful of times over 11 chapters, and it was done for the sake of variety in his facial expressions. (In my world, Alex can frown and smile and grin, too.) And also because, hey. Alex does smirk a lot on the show. It really is part of his demeanor, so it would be OOC for him to not smirk every once in awhile.
I don't know, I guess I'm just tired of reading fic after fic that goes, "Alex smirked as he looked at Izzie. Then he smirked again. He kept smirking. He smirked while he thought. She smirked back. They all had a smirking good time."

You know how when you read a word enough times it starts to lose all meaning and become nonsensical? That's where I'm at with "smirk." I'd like it to go away now, please.
