[mod] giving/aid alternatives?

Sep 04, 2005 17:31

Hello, all!

First of all, a big thank you to everyone for joining up! So far we have one challenge posted, so if you've got a challenge in mind and a needle hole in your arm or an appointment to get one, jump on in!

Second, a couple of people have asked what they can do if, for medical reasons, they are unable to give blood. I know the comm is called blood for fic, but personally I think every little bit of aid helps, so here are my suggestions. If anyone else has suggestions or questions, please do drop a comment. Or if you think a separate comm should be set up for other types of donations, then say so. Right now this group is still fairly small, so I'm inclined to think we can handle all manner of non-cash donations for fan work exchanges. If the membership suddenly took a tremendous upswing, my opinion might change, but for now, I can't think of a reason why not. Can you?

Anyway, other possible donations:
- Food, clothes, and other essentials. I know a few charities in Houston, Baton Rouge and other areas where displaced citizens have been relocated are taking donations of said items. If needed, I can assemble a list.

- Volunteer hours. If anyone has suggestions as to what an hour of volunteer time would be worth (500 words of fic? pencil sketch? five icons? What sounds fair to you guys?) in exchange, I'm open to them. Again, I'd be willing to complie a list of organizations in need of help.

- Data entry at this Wiki page, which is trying to consolidate all of the lists of survivors and people seeking their loved ones that have sprung up across the web into a single database. They're asking the volunteers to take on chunks of 25 listings at a time - maybe 500 words per chunk? Does that sound fair? (note: there's a message on the page right now that says they blew out the server they were using - oops - but should be back and raring to go by tomorrow morning.)

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!
-windsor
