[mod] all non-cash donations accepted!

Sep 07, 2005 10:51

We seem to be in agreement that all donations are good, so to that end I'm happy to announce that any sort of non-cash donation to organizations helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina will be eligible for fan work requests here. If you are making a cash donation and would like to make a request, please check out fandom_charity, which I believe is LJ's original and largest fandom charity community.

Non-cash donations include:
Blood, plasma and platelets
Food and bottled water
Toiletries and sanitary supplies
Baby supplies (diapers, bottles, wipes, etc.)
School supplies and books
Time - yes, volunteer hours count.

I guess the best way to handle this is to tell us in the body of your request post what the nature of your donation was. That way, we can keep track of the progress we've made.

Now, a few links. If anyone has more, please leave a comment and I will update the list accordingly.

VolunteerMatch.org offers listings of volunteer organizations in your area looking for help.

This link will send you to a list on blogspot of where to send goods and supplies. From what I understand, not all Salvation Army branches are able to send goods to the hurricane area, so you might want to check with your local branch before you take stuff there.

The People Finder Project needs volunteers to do data entry on their database of people looking for lost relatives.

From merith: The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is in need of volunteers to help out the animals being rescued. Contact info: Veterinarians and veterinary technicians who want to volunteer assistance can contact Dr. David Senior at the School of Veterinary Medicine at 225-578-9551 or dsenior@vetmed.lsu.edu. Non-veterinary volunteers can contact the School of Veterinary Medicine at 225-578-9900. Also, "The animal shelters are in dire need of large crates and cages. The volunteers also need ice, beverages and food. Other animal supplies, such as food, cat litter, pooper scoopers, vaccines, antibiotics, bandages, and catheters are also welcome and needed." Contact the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association by calling 1-800-524-2996 or 225-928-5862 or check their website.

From officialgaiman: The Houston chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is collecting books for all ages for the Katrina evacuees in their city, and will see to it that the books they gather get to the refugees in their city. (Including those in the Astrodome, which has a playroom.) Anyone who wants to help can send books to: SCBWI-Houston, P.O. Box 19487, Houston, TX 77224

Not entirely unrelated, the ALA website has a listing of what libraries in the surrounding areas are doing to help victims of Katrina - I'm sure most of them would welcome volunteers.

Any other links? Please comment here.

Thanks everyone!
