So I wrote this incredibly lengthy and detailed post yesterday about my reaction to SPN 6.16 and apparently LJ hated me or what I wrote and deleted it all. So in a bid to irate LJ more I’ve rewritten this post, though this time I’m doing it on word first and saving regularly.
In your face LJ!
Grand-pappy Winchester (GPW) - I have never liked GPW. Even when we first met him when Dean was cast back in time by Cas. If anything when they brought back GPW I was mildly freaked and not sure I was going to enjoy it on any level. I don’t know whether it’s because I didn’t like him in X-Files or the fact that his face gives me the creeps.
Yes. I can hear you all horrified at the fact that I just admitted that I didn’t like the guys face but at least I was honest about it.
ANYWAY! I had no idea quite what the writers were thinking when they brought GPW into the show and what they hoped to achieve. Did I want him written out? Yes. Did I want him to die in such a manner? No. If I am honest I’d really been hoping that Sam and Dean would get their show down with their Grand-pappy so that they could discuss what had really happened over that last year with Sam. I guess I wanted maybe a threat of the wall being compromised a la GPW and Dean being the one to shut GPW up with a shot to the head. Not to mention the whole torturing poor Sammy with making him think he’d killed GPW without just cause.
As for GPW in that episode? I got the feeling that they’d written him in with good intentions and then someone decided that they needed to make cutbacks and killed him off. Which if that is the case, it’s not cool.
But as we all know that no-one stays truly dead on Supernatural so who knows.
Gwen - I love Gwen. I really do. Or should that be I loved Gwen? 12.40 seconds in to the episode (including the intro) I was happy, thinking that she’d been awesome for all of her three minutes and incredibly short lines and then BAM 3 seconds later she’s dead.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
I get that they needed Dean to kill someone but why Gwen? Why not have him almost kill someone and then let Gwen live? I was holding out real bonafide hope that she’d survive and see that GPW was evil and ditch his ass to go solo. Then we’d get to see Gwen doing her thing and occasionally contacting the boys or dropping in on a hunt. But no. They kill her off and expect us to be alright with that?! Well let me tell you SPN writers, I am not impressed. Gwen had potential to be a strong female character and another family link for the boys. Okay sure, they haven’t exactly shown allegiance to blood before, I mean Dean repeatedly chose Sam over Adam but it’s the effort and thought that counts, or do my Mum always told me when I was little. I’d just hoped that they were going to give Gwen a chance to be a more complete character before she died.
Rufus - I loves me some Rufus! That guy was a legend with his one-liners and snarky-isms. The way that he and Bobby were together was pretty darn awesome. I was a big fan of his and, like Gwen, they killed him off. His death wasn’t even eventful, just a knife to the pacemaker and BAM another one dead. I’m just going to start liking the characters I normally hate and hope that they kill them off faster.
I wish there had been a chance to explore Omaha a little more with Rufus, find out the things that made him tick and the passions in his life. We only had a glimpse but what we saw revealed a hunter who was a decent guy. The kind that tried and although he could never forgive Bobby he at least was able to work with him and remember that sometimes mistakes are made.
I won’t deny that I wish Rufus had been able to give Bobby the absolution he sought but flipside of the coin that wouldn’t have been what Rufus wanted.
Eve - Is Eve really evil or just getting even? Okay bad play on words I know but I’m being honest here about the whole Eve situation. Sure, she’s the Mother of all monsters and has come back to set things straight but is she really all that evil? I think I’m going to take a closer look at this and come back to you with an answer.
Bobby - Oh Bobby. I love seeing you out of your generic baseball caps and pulling the true hunter card. Seeing you on the job makes me want to squee just a little bit because you are awesome.
Forget what GPW said about you playing at Daddy to the boys. They love you for it and they need you. GPW has proven himself to be nothing more than a manipulative, conniving and downright mean ol’ man who doesn’t deserve to mock you. I’m sorry that you didn’t get your absolution from Rufus and you lost a dear friend but you are alive and really that’s all that matters to us and the boys too for that matter!
As for evil Bobby? That was scary and kinda weird at the same time.
Oh and where was the chance to see you ragging on the boys for smashing in your front window? Huh?! I was hoping you’d still be giving them grief for their window diving stunt.
Sam - Oh Sammy, it’s so good to have you back baby boy. This episode was another step closer back to our boys as we used to love them. It was so good to see how Sam is going back to being the only one who can take Dean for a walk to cool him off or sitting between his big brother and GPW to protect him from doing something stupid. Oh and Sammy? The moment you were separated from the group when searching for GPW and how you only cried out for Dean? That speaks volumes to me. It’s good to see you back you getting back to how you were before, I’ve missed the Sam who worries about his actions and wants to protect his big brother. I knew you were back to the Sammy who makes me think of my baby brother when you had to turn away when Dean is electrocuting Bobby because he can’t stand to watch their surrogate father get hurt.
Their dynamic was back on course, I mean if you didn’t get that from when they were outside the factory waiting for Rufus and Bobby to join them. How they were laughing and smiling. Just watching Sammy now and thinking about the first half of this season... I guess I really did need to be reminded that Sam is a loveable puppy who needs to be mollycoddled and protected by Dean but at the same time just wants to keep his big brother safe.
Please Sammy. Don’t scratch the wall.
Dean - Oh Dean. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Those witty one liners. The genuine smiles. The expressions you pulled. Your desperation to kill GPW. Your need to get to Sam. OH.EM.GEE! Crying out for SAM when you boys got separated! The look on your face, oh I was nearly crying. Overall this was an awesome episode for you because there was a lot less angst Dean that we’ve been seeing during the first half and a lot more of the Dean we know and love.
Sure things aren’t perfect but they were a lot better. As for your Star Trek reference? I take my hat off to you sir for being a geek.
I was a little peeved that they didn’t give you a chance to show off your hunting skills and go against the others. I didn’t want you to kill any of them... apart from GPW... but it would have been cool to see Dean get back into his hunter ways by being manipulated by a monster. As for cleaning the slate? Good. I’m glad you are finally able to start letting go of the past and moving forward. I mean it’s not going to be easy but given time I really hope you boys can get back to the duo we all know and love.
Summary - Overall the episode wasn’t too shabby. There are certain aspects which I wish had been done differently or explored further but, despite the body count too, I enjoyed it. So what does this mean for our boys then? What is Eve up to? What is Castiel hiding from them? Have we seen the back of GPW and Gwen for good now?
I guess I really don’t know but I do know that April 15th can’t roll around soon enough.
