Forgive me if you're on facebook too and I've already asked you to join the group I've created on there. But this is important to me.
The British Government has finally agreed to award a commendation to the women that served in the Land Army during the Second World War, more than sixty years after the war ended.
However, this award is not available to the families of women who passed away before December 6th 2007.
The movement was comprised of 80,000 women at its peak in 1943 and it is estimated by the government that 20,000 are still alive, the youngest of whom are in their late 70s or early 80s. These women served their country in a time of great need and yet have received no recognition until now.
As Hilary Benn said as the commendation was announced, “These women worked tirelessly for the benefit of their nation. Their selfless service to the country deserves the recognition that this badge will represent.”
The above is a photo of my Nan in her Land Army uniform. She was conscripted into the Land Army as soon as she turned 18 in February 1942 and served until the Summer of 1944 when she was reassgined to serve as an auxillary nurse at the American Camp near Kington due to her suffering from an appendicitis.
She was very proud of her time in the Land Army and often told us stories when we were younger, although she was always disappointed that she never got the recognition her brother and husband did from serving in the Army and RAF respectively. As she passed away in May 2007 she is not eligible for a medal something which I do not agree with as she would have been so honoured and proud to receive one.
I and others would like that the recognition be extended to those not lucky enough to live to see their service rewarded and that their descendants be able to claim the award in their honour, and I would appreciate it if you were to sign the following petition which has been set up:
