Happy New Year.
Let us start with a dumb thing I did. I will admit to having a very limited knowledge with leafy greens. Generally my consumption of leafy greens is rather limited to spinach, kale and a few varieties of lettuce; mostly store bought iceberg or whatever is cheap and available at the local farmers' market.
A few days ago I made an appointment to donate blood for tomorrow and on Tuesday I went to the grocery store for stuff plus spinach, wanting to make sure my iron level was high enough, because, yes I have had a problem with that in the past.
Usually these are the types of spinach I have gotten:
I have sometimes gotten from the farmers' market this:
or this:
Tuesday while at the grocery store there were two bins side-by-side with what looked kind of like this
and one bin was labeled "Spinach" and the one next to it was unmarked. I assumed they were both the same and they probably were, the second being an "overflow" of the first so I grabbed a bunch. It wasn't until later after I was soaking them--totally looking forward to a spinach salad--that I happened to read the band. I am sure that by now you have guessed that it was not spinach. You'd be right. It was turnip greens. I googled it to find out that they are bitter. I chewed on a small portion of leaf. And spit it out. Because, yep, way too bitter for a salad. Blech. So I said to myself--after much cursing--self, I guess I will have to go out on Thursday and buy some spinach. Unfortunately, it has been snowing since Tuesday and I am hearing/reading that the roads are terrible. So guess who will not be going out to the store just to get spinach? Yep, that'd be me. Big frowny face.
FWIW here is a photo of a view from my patio.
You can't see from the photo that it is still currently snowing.
