Wednesday I drove out to Illinois for the weekend. I got to the motel and could have sworn I'd stayed there last year. Except apparently I intended to, but ended up going elsewhere. It is a Motel 6 and has 3 floors. There are only two exits so people at the front desk can see everyone who comes & goes. Not a good sign.
The next morning I had the window curtain open & saw a police car driving through the lot. I assumed it was to check to see if non handicapped cars were parked in handicapped spaces. Some officers actually do that. Finally I was ready to go to my sisters' house. As I drove around, I noticed the police car was parked behind a Ford Taurus. Then I saw the back window of the car had been smashed in. A really bad sign. Thankfully for the rest of my stay, my car remained safe.
Thursday we went to Shedd Aquarium, which was fun (have a couple pictures):
Friday we went to the place where my BiL works & my sister goes horseback riding. At first I did want to ride, because it has been years since I've gone, but my (4 year old) nephew wanted me to go with him & his dad to the
Fermilab high-rise building for a tour. I admit I wanted to see that more.
As we drove to it, my BiL, J, told me about the outside of it and the whole cooling system and other interesting stuff. Then we went into the building to the 15th floor and explained lots more interesting stuff.
Pictures from the window:
Back down to the ground floor...
There used to be a pendulum that hung from the ceiling of the atrium, which I didn't get to see.
Unfortunately, a visiting
scientist committed suicide last month and knocked it down. Now potted plants sit there:
Then more grounds tour on the way back to where my sister was finished horseback riding.
Afterwards was back to the motel for a nap. Just as I got back, I got a call from my job asking if I could work that night. Sorry, no, I told them. I'm in Illinois and won't be back until Monday.
